Margaret, the eldest of the four, was sixteen, and very pretty, being plump and fair, with large eyes, plenty of soft brown hair, a sweet mouth, and

white hands, of which she was rather vain. Fifteen- year-old Jo was very tall, thin, and brown, and reminded one of a colt, for she never seemed to know what to do with her long limbs, which were very much in her way. She had a decided mouth, a comical nose, and sharp, gray eyes, which appeared to see everything, and were by turns fierce, funny, or thoughtful. Her long, thick hair was her one beauty, but it was usually bundled into a net, to be out of her way. Round shoulders had Jo, big hands and feet, a flyaway look to her clothes, and the uncomfortable appearance of a girl who was rapidly shooting up into a woman and didn't like it. Elizabeth, or Beth, as everyone called her, was a rosy, smooth- haired, bright-eyed girl of thirteen, with a shy manner, a timid voice, and a peaceful expression which was seldom disturbed. Her father called her 'Little Miss Tranquility', and the name suited her excellently, for she seemed to live in a happy world of her own, only venturing out to meet the few whom she trusted and loved. Amy, though the youngest, was a most important person, in her own opinion at least. A regular snow maiden, with blue eyes, and yellow hair curling on her shoulders, pale and slender, and always carrying herself like a young lady mindful of her manners. What the characters of the four sisters were we will leave to be found out. The clock struck six and, having swept up the hearth, Beth put a pair of slippers down to warm. Somehow the sight of the old shoes had a good effect upon the girls, for Mother was coming, and everyone brightened to welcome her. Meg stopped lecturing, and lighted the lamp, Amy got out of the easy chair without being asked, and Jo forgot how tired she was as she sat up to hold the slippers nearer to the blaze. "They are quite worn out. Marmee must have a new pair." "I thought I'd get her some with my dollar," said Beth. "No, I shall!" cried Amy. "I'm the oldest," began Meg, but Jo cut in with a decided, "I'm the man of the family now Papa is away, and I shall provide the slippers, for he told me to take special care of Mother while he was gone." "I'll tell you what we'll do," said Beth, "let's each get her something for Christmas, and not get anything for ourselves."

At the big studios outside London the ephemeral dreamworld of television is carefully concocted by technicians and producers, in their factories

of images and fame. Under the cameras dangling like bats from the roof, the disparate subjects assemble – an archbishop talking to a pop singer, a trade-unionist talking to a Tory MP: they troop on and off in endless cavalcade, all mixed together – professors, jugglers, Cabinet ministers, ventriloquists, dukes, chairmen, comperes and diplomats – all punctuated by quick glimpses of detergents and toothpaste. On the magic screen people who have never met each other before chat away with Christian names, as if they jostled together every day in some inner world of power.

Most people
use money every day. It is so common they many people rarely think about why
money is important and what gives it value. In general, money is any item that
is widely accepted as payment for products. It is something people see and use
almost every day. Though money is commonplace, its forms and functions are
complex. The familiar paper bills and metal coins are only two of the forms
money can take. In the past, many things served as money - beads, shells,
cattle and even slaves. Precious metals, especially gold and silver, have been
a favorite form of money. Some of the things used as money - fishhooks or cattle,
for example - also have had value as consumer goods. Most of the items used as money,
however, have had value only because people agreed that they could be exchanged
for goods and services. In other words, what is used as money often has little
value of its own. Its value comes from the product for which it can be
exchanged.

In most
modern economies money serves several functions. As a means of exchange money
is used to trade for goods and services. Less complex societies often do not
use money at all. They simply barter, or trade, one product for another. Two
farmers may trade a bushel of wheat for a jar of milk, for example. The more
complex a country’s economy, the harder it is to use a system of trading one
good for another. Money is the answer to that problem.

As a store
of value people use money to save their wealth for the future. Storing goods is
not so easy as storing money. Many goods, such as food, spoil quickly. Other,
such as cars, take up a lot of space. But money can be kept in a bank or a safe
or a pocketbook until it is needed.

There is no need to rack one’s brain about outings in Moscow as the cultural
life is intense. A lot of famous theatres and galleries are there. The Bolshoi and
Maly Theatres are in the centre of Moscow in Teatralnaya square. Just round the
corner there is the Moscow Art Theatre (the MkhaT). The Operetta Theatre is a
two-minute walk from the Teatralnaya Square as well. It’s incredible, but there are
about ninety theatres in Moscow (apart from the different studios and theatrical
societies), more than seventy museums and a great number of exhibitions of all
kinds.
In spite of the wide choice, it is not easy to recommend something to a
foreigner. Tastes differ, you know. But even if you have no idea of the person’s
interests, there are some places to suggest. They may not be at the top of the list of
Moscow entertainment, but they promise great enjoyment for a person of any age
and background.
One of these places is the fairy world of the Yury Nikulin Old Circus on
Tsvetnoi Boulevard. It is really old, one of the oldest circuses in Russia. It was
opened in 1880 and since that time has been working non-stop (even during the
Great Patriotic War). The Old Circus has always had the reputation of one of the
best circuses in the world. It is famous for its very good programmes for children.
People still remember brilliant clowns like Karandash and Oleg Popov. Yury
Niculin also worked there and now the circus is named after him: the Nikulinsy
Circus.
