Read the text below about Elizabeth II. According to the text, mark the statements 1-11 true(T), false(F), or unstated(U).

Queen Elizabeth is the queen of England, Wales and Northern Ireland and the Head of the Commonwealth. Elizabeth II is a modern, constitutional monarch. T his means she isn’t the head of Britain’s government, but she is the Head of State. Elizabeth II became the queen in 1952. Her coronation took place in 1953. It was the first coronation to be shown on television.

Queen Elizabeth II has a wide range of duties to perform. Here are some of them. The Queen takes part in many important government processes, for example, the State Opening of Parliament. Among her many royal duties are regular visits abroad, which help to keep friendly links with foreign countries, and especially those of Commonwealth, and to encourage trade. The Queen also supports many charities, using her name and influence to help them to raise money. In January and June the Queen presents medals or “honours” at Buckingham Palace. She gives them to people who have done something special. “The honours list” includes famous people such as top actors, musicians, politicians, scientists as well as ordinary people whose actions have benefited their local community.

When foreign kings, queens and presidents visit Britain, they often stay at either Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle. But the Queen doesn’t just entertain Heads of State. Four times a year there are also “Royal Garden Parties”. The Queen invites all kinds of people. Some are famous, but other people have just worked hard for charities for a long time. Nine thousand people are invited to the parties which take place in the grounds of Buckingham Palace..Prince Philip and other “royal’s” often come too, so the royal family can talk to as many people as possible.

In 1969, the Queen wanted to “ open a window” on to the royal family. That year television cameras came into the royal home and filmed the family in private for the first time. Forty million people watched the programme. They saw a different side of the royal family. The programme brought the royal family closer to people, but it also helped to make problems for the future. Now the public wanted to see more and more of royal private life. It was harder to keep the reporters out. In the last thirty years there have been a lot of documentaries, series and interviews about the royal family. Before the days of television they seemed formal. Today they seem informal and friendly. As well as TV programmes, there are also newspaper stories, books and magazines about the Queen and her family. Hundreds appear every year. Some are good- many are bad, but almost all of them are popular.

Read the text about the people coming to retirement. Mark if the statements below are true or false.

Retirement – surely it’s a golden age when you can escape the daily grind of work and spend your time doing gardening, taking holidays and chatting with friends? Not for everyone. Some people love their work so much that they stay on into their 70s, 80s and 90s.
The factory worker
Dorothy Beckett, 93, has been working in a cake factory in Yorkshire, UK for more than 56 years. She works a 40-hour week, putting cakes in boxes, together with people who are 70 years younger than her. In 1945, aged 36, Dorothy set up the factory with her husband, Fred. Now, the business has a £4m annual turnover. “I’ve never wanted to retire,” she says. “It would be the end of me”.
The car dealer
William Spencer wanted to be a lawyer. But when he discovered that he didn’t have the right qualifications, he studied accountancy at night school instead and got a job in a car sales showroom. That was 72 years ago, and he is still there today! “I’m paid for my experience,” explains William, 91. “I help the young ones to sell. I advise the staff, introduce customers, arrange special deals, deal with problems, and make sure everyone is happy.”
The banker
“In the past year I’ve travelled to London, Paris and Milan for work,” says Gerald Lilley, sitting with a poetry book on his knee in his apartment in New York. “I’ve been to London three times, to Japan twice and to China, well, lots of times. When I’m not travelling, I like to be in the office every day at about 9.30. And I tend to leave at around 4.00 p.m. Mr Lilley is 94, and is senior advisor at one of the big investment banks. He finds the flights more tiring nowadays, especially after long days in meetings. “I suppose it’s my age,” he says, “but I have my evening to relax, have a drink and read German, French and English poetry.”

Washington city and district , is the capital of the United States of America

located at the confluence of the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers and flanked by Maryland on the north, east and south-east and by Virginia on the southwest. The city of Washington is coextensive with the District of Columbia , the federal district of the United States . Washington was named after George Washington and Christopher Columbus .The city’swas selected by President George Washington in 1791.AFrench engineer and architect was commissioned to plan the future capital. In 1800 the still unfinished city replaced Philadelphia as the nation’s capital.

Washington is one of the few national capitals founded solely as a seat of government. The original plan of the city took into account its future growth. As the new republic increased in size and wealth, Washington grew to become one of the most important and beautiful cities in the world. It is the site of impressive government buildings, magnificent monuments, important historical landmarks, fine museums, and broad, tree-shaded avenues and malls. Every year Washington is visited by millions of tourists from all parts of the United States and from many other countries of the world. But the city is also home to a large number of people – the place where they live , work, and raise families. As such, it is confronted by the same problems facing most large cities . The city as a whole is divided into four quadrants ( northwestern, northeastern, southwestern and southeastern) by lines running north-south and east-west though the Capitol of the United States . The central open space called the Mall is surrounded y public buildings and museums and I flanked on the east by the Capitol and on the west by the Lincoln Memorial. The broad Pennsylvania Avenue, which links the White House and the the capitol, is Washington’s ceremonial street and is the site of the president’s inaugural day parade. Capitol Hill is largely neighborthood of restored Victorian houses. Because of its great size, central location , and elevated position on Capitol Hill, the Capitol dominates the Washington skyline. There is a law in Washington not to build structures higher than the Capitol , so it is the highest. The US Congress meets in this building. Visitors may attend congressional sessions to watch legislators in action.

Interviewer: Daniel Ash, your new book is a collection of articles about people with strange jobs.

Daniel: Yes, I collected stories about unusual jobs from all over the world.
I : So you’re not talking about actors or shop assistant s.
D: No, all the people in the book have very strange jobs.
I: I see it’s organized into different industries, like the cleaning industry. But isn’t cleaning a normal job?
D: Normally, yes. But did you know there’s a man in America called Brad Fields and he cleans chewing gum off the Statue of Liberty? Well, actually, he’s got a company called Gumbusters. But that’s all they do – they clean gum off the streets and famous buildings of New York.
I: Oh, what a horrible job!
D: Yes, Americans chew 56 billion pieces of chewing gum a year. Then they throw most of it onto the street. That’s a lot of cleaning.
I: OK, that job is quite unusual .But what about in the food industry?
D: Well, when a company wants to advertise food they sometimes need a food stylist. Their job is to make food look good in advertisements.
I: I’ve never heard of that job before.
D: Well, there are only about 20 food stylists in Britain. For example, when we look at a picture of strawberries and cream we’re really looking at strawberries and white paint.
I: Really?
D: Yes, and they paint sausages with washing-up liquid, then coffee, to make them look natural.
I: So what’s the strangest job in your book, do you think?
D: Well, how about vermiculturalist?
I: What’s that?
D: A vermiculturalist is a worm farmer. These people manage farms that only have worms. No other animals, only worms.
I: But why?
D: Well, worms like eating rubbish and that’s good for the environment. So companies pay a worm farmer to clean up their rubbish.
I: Fascinating, but ugh, not a job for me. I see there’s also a chapter about artists. What strange jobs did you find in …
