Jean's first visit to the theatre
When I invited Jean to the theatre I was afraid she would refuse my invitation, but she had accepted it. I still
doubted whether she would come: her religion did not allow to go to a theatre, play cards or love a man of
other religious views. However, when I met her at the entrance to the theatre I saw she had thrown off her
religious scruples. She looked eager and her dark eyes sparkled with excitement. Our seats were in the pit.
They were not expensive, but we could see the stage quite well. I gave her the programme and my opera
glasses.
Presently the lights went down; then the curtain rose upon a scene of eighteenth-century Paris at the time of
the French Revolution. It was a melodrama full of hopeless love and heroic self-sacrifice, a play after Dickens's
novel "A Tale of Two Cities". When Martin Harvey, a famous actor, who played the leading part of Sydney
Carton appeared on the stage, Jean's eyes were full of interest and delight. She was greatly impressed by pale,
dark Carton and delicate, charming Lucie Manette, the girl he loved.
During the interval Jean said: "Oh, Mr. Shannon, how splendid it is! So different from what I expected! I
can't tell you what a treat it is for me! I feel so sorry for poor Sydney Carton! He is so much in love with Lucy
and she ... It must be a frightful thing to be in love and not to be loved!"
"Quite," I agreed gravely. "At least they are good friends, and friendship is a wonderful thing."
She consulted her programme to conceal her flush. "The girl who does Lucie is very sweet, she has such
lovely, blonde hair and is so young!" "Well, in real life she is Martin Harvey's wife, must be about forty-five,
and that blonde hair is a wig."
"Please, don't, Mr. Shannon! How can you joke about such things?" she cried in a shocked voice...
As the last scene was under way Jean's hand, small and hot, touched mine. We sat hand in hand as though to
support each other while watching Carton with a pale face and carefully arranged hair mount the guillotine
and meet his death. Jean couldn't keep her tears and they fell upon the back of my hand like raindrops in
spring.
When at last the play came to its end there was a storm of applause and many curtain calls for Miss de
Silva and Martin Harvey. Miss Jean Law, however, was too overcome to join in such a banal applause, her
feelings were too deep for words. Only when we were in the street she whispered with shining eyes. "Oh,
Robert, you can't believe me how much I've enjoyed myself!" It was the first time she had used my Christian
name.

Our ancestors were a pretty scruffy,lazy lot,spending most of their time hanging around waiting for history to begin. They only ate what stumbled right in front of them and, unlike their posh relatives in the south of France and Spain, didn't even try to cheer up their caves by painting those daft looking animals on their walls. Mind you, there are some amongst us , mentioning no names , who believe they did the caves a favour.

The case of the ruined roses.
"That was a dood programme on UFOs," said Nina her cousin Max as they walked down the street. "Its amazing! UFOs were reported as early as 1800."
"That pretty hard to belive," said Max. "Anyway, do you really belive there are such things?" Nina started to answer when they heard a loud scream coming from Coach Thornton house. "Come on," shouted Max and they ran there. The coach was standing in front of his house and looking at ten rose bushes pulled from the ground.
"Look at that!" he cried. "Just look at that."
"That terrible," cried Nina. "Do you know who ruined the roses?" football players for missing a class. They were pretty angry with me."
"First thing, let get these roses back in the ground," said Max.
"Then well find out who dad it."
Nina and Max helped Coach Thorton to replant the roses. Then he invited them in for milk and biscuits.
"Now," said Nina. "Am I right? You benched Sam Cartland, Mike Brooks and Alex Avery." "And you lost the game," added Max. "I know," said the coach. "But rules are rules. Do you think they ruined the roses?"
"Im sure one oh them did it," said Nina.
"Lets see," said Max after they left. "Coach said the roses were all right when he looked out at nine. But after ten, he found them pulled up."
"So, we have to check who doesn have an an alibi for between nine and ten. Look!" Nina pointed. "There Alex Avery over at the Dairy Bar."
"Hi, kids," said Alex as they came in. "Hello," said Max. "We didnt see you in the football game."
"I was benched but I guess the coach didnt have any choice."
"Can you tell us what you were doing between nine and ten this morning?" asked Nina.
"Ive ben here since nine." He tirned to the girl behind the bar counter. "Isnt that right, Amy?"
"Uh huh. You helped me to carry that heavy box."
"Have you been anywhere near Coach Thorntons house?" asked Max. Alex looked surprised. "No, I havent."

The press, television and radio (mass media) play an important part in the life of the society. They influence the way people look at the world and make them change their views. Some people say, ”News is not what happens – it is what you see or read in mass media.” In other words, mass media shapes public opinion. (Sometimes it is good, but sometimes terribly bad. It depends.)

Millions of people watch TV and read newspapers and magazines in their spare time. Television dominates one`s life if the family watches it most of the time. Television informs, educates, and entertains people. It is also a habit-forming drug impossible to resist.

Various TV games, such as quiz shows, and music programmes attract a large audience. During TV quiz programmes the questions are answered by the viewers.

Then there are daily TV serials known as soap operas. Some people find them boring, others consider them to be good entertainment and relaxation.

There is also a lot of advertising on TV. A lot of commercial firms buy the time to advertise their goods.

Advertising often annoys the general public. A film, a good basketball or football match may be interrupted several times with advertisements for the soap powder or new perfume.

To convince the viewers that a certain product is the best and to persuade him to buy it takes not only a lot of imagination but also a lot of time. The same advertisements are repeated dozens of time every day, which bores the viewers.

Some people say there is too much violence on television, which has a bad influence on viewers, especially young people. Television often shows scenes of violence.
