ANDREI SAKHAROV
Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov, an outstanding scientist and public figure, was born on the 21st of May, 1921, into the family of teachers. He graduated from Moscow University in 1942. In 1947 he defended his thesis for the degree of Candidate of Science. In 1953 he defended his Doctorate thesis and was elected member of the Academy of Sciences.
When he was a graduate student Sakharov began to work on the Soviet nuclear weapons programme and soon he suggested a totally new idea for a hydrogen bomb design. But he was getting more and more worried about the consequences of his work. He understood better than anybody else what nuclear weapons meant and he thought about his own responsibility and about the responsibility of the states which possessed such weapons.
In 1968 he wrote an article attacking Soviet political system. He wrote that people needed a democratic society, free of dogmatism.
Sakharov is often called the father of the Soviet hydrogen bomb, but he became more known as a champion for human rights and freedom. For this work the Nobel Committee awarded him the Peace Prize in 1975. The Committee called him "the conscience of mankind". The Soviet authorities, however, did not allow him to go to Norway to receive the award.
In 1966 he took part in his first human rights demonstration, a one-minute silent protest in Pushkin Square. A year later, he wrote a letter to Communist Party leader Leonid Brezhnev defending imprisoned dissidents.
His international repute as a scientist kept him out of jail, but in 1980 when he protested against Soviet intervention in Afghanistan, he was deprived of all his titles and orders and exiled to the city of Gorky. In 1986 Michail Gorbachev invited Sakharov to return to Moscow. He was given back all his titles and orders.
Andrei Sakharov died in 1989. He is remembered by everybody as an outstanding humanist, who could teach and inspire and who foresaw the changes that are taking place now.

during the past decades, the term computer is becoming a household word. Computer applications have expanded to such breadth that the computer is now an integral part of virtually every type of business and industrial enterprises. The number of electronic computers used in any given field of human activity is sometimes believed to indicate the degree of its modernity. For example the more computers a scientific institute uses the more modem it is believed to be. It is not always bom in mind, however, that computers alone represent only what is called the hardware, i.e. the machinery together with its subtle technical and logical design. In order that the hardware may be used effectively, another essential factor is needed: the so-called software or applied thoughts. IN the preparation of computer programs, the working out of the logical aspects of material to be manipulated in a computer, takes-up as much, if not more, time as the actual production of the hard ware and is by no means easier. The software, as most intangible product, is not always capable ol being readily evaluated. This, however, does not change the fact that it is at least as decisive as the hardware in obtaining solutions to concrete scientific and technological problems. There are two basic types of electronic computers: digital and analogue. Each type has its uses in various fields. However, they have one thing in common: for their effective operation they require ingeniously thought-out software.

Washington city and district , is the capital of the United States of America

located at the confluence of the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers and flanked by Maryland on the north, east and south-east and by Virginia on the southwest. The city of Washington is coextensive with the District of Columbia , the federal district of the United States . Washington was named after George Washington and Christopher Columbus .The city’swas selected by President George Washington in 1791.AFrench engineer and architect was commissioned to plan the future capital. In 1800 the still unfinished city replaced Philadelphia as the nation’s capital.

Washington is one of the few national capitals founded solely as a seat of government. The original plan of the city took into account its future growth. As the new republic increased in size and wealth, Washington grew to become one of the most important and beautiful cities in the world. It is the site of impressive government buildings, magnificent monuments, important historical landmarks, fine museums, and broad, tree-shaded avenues and malls. Every year Washington is visited by millions of tourists from all parts of the United States and from many other countries of the world. But the city is also home to a large number of people – the place where they live , work, and raise families. As such, it is confronted by the same problems facing most large cities . The city as a whole is divided into four quadrants ( northwestern, northeastern, southwestern and southeastern) by lines running north-south and east-west though the Capitol of the United States . The central open space called the Mall is surrounded y public buildings and museums and I flanked on the east by the Capitol and on the west by the Lincoln Memorial. The broad Pennsylvania Avenue, which links the White House and the the capitol, is Washington’s ceremonial street and is the site of the president’s inaugural day parade. Capitol Hill is largely neighborthood of restored Victorian houses. Because of its great size, central location , and elevated position on Capitol Hill, the Capitol dominates the Washington skyline. There is a law in Washington not to build structures higher than the Capitol , so it is the highest. The US Congress meets in this building. Visitors may attend congressional sessions to watch legislators in action.

In the room where Mr Small. Dr Foam and Mrs Bulmer were talking to the children, there were some really old people. Mr Small went up to one of them. "I see that you're a very old man." he said.
"Yes. I am. I'm 90." the old man replied.
"Could you give the children here some advice about a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle?" Mr Small asked.
"Sure. Follow my example. Don't smoke, don't drink, don't eat too much sugar or fat and drink lots of water."
At that moment Dr Foam found another old man. who looked older than the first one. He was sitting in a wheelchair, but his eyes were merry and bright.
"How old are you, sir?" Dr Foam asked.
"I'm ninety-five." the man replied.
"Can you tell us why you have lived so long?" Doctor Foam asked.
"It's easy. I always do exercise, and I don't smoke or drink. I spend a lot of time in the open air and I'm a vegetarian." Just then Mrs Bulmer decided to join in the conversation. She saw a very, very old man in the corner of the room. He had no teeth or hair and he couldn't see or hear very well, so she had to come very close to him. The children followed her.
"May 1 ask you a couple of questions, sir," she shouted.
"Yes." the old man whispered.
"Why have you lived so long, sir?" Mrs Bulmer asked.
"I don't know." the man replied.
"Tell us about your lifestyle," Mrs Bulmer continued.
"OK, then. I smoke thirty cigarettes a day and drink a bottle of whisky every day. Sometimes I also have two bottles of beer. I never eat vegetables or fruit and I live on chocolate and cakes."
"How old are you, sir?" Mr Bulmer exclaimed.
"I'm forty." the "old" man replied.

К этому тексту нужно задать 5 вопросов на английском! TEXT №7 ‘A FISH BONE’. One day , some Americans were having dinner at a hotel in London.

When the fish was put on the table, a young man said: "Let's examine the fish carefully. Perhaps we'll find a diamond in it". Everybody began to laugh, but an old man said quietly: "Yes, I'm sure we have all heard such stories. Let me tell you what happened to me once". "When I was a young man", he began, "I worked for a big company in New York: and I was sent to England to do some work there. I was in love with a beautiful girl, and before I left for England, we decided that we would be married when I returned home." I stayed in England for two months. I sent letters or postcards to the girl almost every day, but after the first two weeks I didn't receive any answers. But I didn't think anything was the matter, and before I left for home, I bought a beautiful diamond ring for her. On the ship one morning, a telegram was brought to me. It was from a friend in New York, who told me that the girl had changed her mind and was going to be married to another man. I was so angry that I threw the diamond ring into the sea. My friend came to the port to meet me, and he invited me to dinner. When we were sitting down at the table and I was eating fish, I suddenly felt something hard in my mouth. What do you think it was? "The diamond!" all the Americans cried. "No", the old man answered. "It was a fish bone".
