We didn’t always live on Mango Street. Before that we lived on Loomis on the third floor, and before that we

lived on Keeler. Before Keeler it was Paulina, and before that I can’t remember. But what I remember most is moving a lot. Each time it seemed there’d be one more of us. By the time we got to Mango Street we were six—Mama, Papa, Carlos, Kiki, my sister Nenny and me. The house on Mango Street is ours, and we don’t have to pay rent to anybody, or share the yard with the people downstairs, or be careful not to make too much noise, and there isn’t a landlord banging on the ceiling with a broom. But even so, it’s not the house we’d thought we’d get. We had to leave the flat on Loomis quick. The water pipes broke and the landlord wouldn’t fix them because the house was too old. We had to leave fast. We were using the washroom next door and carrying water over in empty milk gallons. That’s why Mama and Papa looked for a house, and that’s why we moved into the house on Mango Street, far away on the other side of town.

They that wash on Monday
Have all the week to dry;
They that wash on Tuesday
Are not so much awry;
They that wash on Wednesday
Are not so much to blame;
They that wash on Thursday
Wash for shame;
They that wash on Friday,
Wash in need;
They that wash on Saturday,
Oh! they're sluts indeed.

Mirrow, mirrow on the wall...

In the beginning, I put it down to a
simple case of exam nerves. My daughter Sarah had just turned sixteen
and was studying hard for her GCSEs*. I knew she'd do well, as she was
top of the class in all her subjects at school and had always been a
high achiever. But as the time for the exams drew nearer, her behaviour
started to change - drastically.

Sarah became sullen and
withdrawn. She wasn't the lively teenager I knew. But the most worrying
thing of all was that she was hardly eating anything. She refused to eat
with the rest of the family and was having only light snacks in her
room. At the time I didn't want to make a big deal of it, as I thought
I'd just make her more anxious about her exams. I was convinced that
once she'd taken the exams, she would soon settle down and everything
would get back to normal.

But it didn't. In fact, it got worse.
By the middle of the summer, Sarah had become very skinny and pale. She
also had wild mood swings, bursting into tears or becoming enraged by
the slightest thing. I should say at this point that my initial
reactions to this situation weren't very helpful. We had huge fights
about her being too thin and I tried to persuade her to eat more, but
she just turned her nose up at everything I offered her. When nothing I
said or did seemed to make any difference, I really felt at a complete
loss about what else I could do or who I could turn to. I was desperate.
After a lot of thought I realised that I would have to try other
tactics. Screaming and tearing my hair out were definitely not improving
the situation.

I started by looking up eating disorders on
various websites, to get as much information as I could, and what I
found out almost scared me to death. Anorexia nervosa is a condition
that typically affects teenage girls. There are a variety of reasons as
to why it can develop, but it is usually said to be because of a
distorted body image and lack of self-esteem. Some young women think
they are too fat, even when they are not, and feel that they are
unattractive or worthless. The media have been accused of playing a role
in the rise of eating disorders in recent years, because of the way
they portray women. Using underweight models in adverts in glossy
magazines and on television may be a factor in encouraging young women
to equate thinness with beauty, glamour and success.

I was
shocked to discover that this disease can seriously damage the heart and
make bones brittle and easy to break. However, the most frightening
aspect of the condition is that in 10% of cases it leads to the death of
the sufferer. The information was terrifying, but it helped me to come
to terms with the fact that someone with a severe eating disorder needs
love and support and urgent medical attention.

It took a lot of
calm and gentle persuasion to get my tearful daughter to agree to go
with me to a doctor who specialises in eating disorders. That was two
years ago and the road to recovery has been long and hard. Sarah spent
two months in hospital to get her weight back to normal and since then
she has been seeing a psychiatrist to help her deal with the underlying
causes of the problem.

It was tough for me, too. I felt very
guilty about her illness - that somehow it was my fault, and I was a bad
mother who had caused her daughter so much anxiety she had started to
starve herself. But we've managed to get through it together. Now Sarah
is looking forward to starting university, the colour has returned to
her cheeks and she is back to being the vibrant young woman she was
before the whole dreadful nightmare started

When we go for an interview, most of us think carefully about what to wear and what to say but hardly ever about how to act – in other words, what our body language is telling the interviewer. So can we appear cool when we are feeling so nervous?

Judy James, a body language specialist and author, says that the most interviewees who ask for advice are told “Just be yourself”. This, she says, is the wrong approach. “If you are just going to be yourself, why not turn up in an old tracksuit? You would never do that, so why just “be yourself” in body language? Instead, by marketing your body language, you can control your own success”. According to experts, body language accounts for 55 per cent of the effect we have when communicating. Tone of voice accounts for 33 per cent, and words for just 7 per cent – so what you say matters much less than how you behave.

Employers nowadays are cautious about the fast talking interviewee who has learned certain words and phrases but who may be hiding a basic lack of knowledge or simply lying. So they look increasingly for other signs, which will show a person’s character and ability – such as body language. You will be more impressive at an interview if you have prepared by doing a “dress rehearsal” of your facial expressions and hand movements in front of a mirror. It sounds ridiculous but it works.

When it comes to facial signals, you should always smile when you enter the interview room and when the interview has finished, because first and last impressions count. Try to smile from eyes first – if models can do this, so can we. There is no worse than a painted – on smile and terrified eyes.
You should also try to maintain eye - contact with the interviewer, but not too long. If you are in front of a panel of interviews, look first at the person who asked you a question, and then at each of the other panel members in turn. Looking just at the questioner is a common mistake.

Once you are sitting down, your hands should generally stay loosely in your lap. Use them to make a point occasionally but never raise them above shoulder level, and do not play with your hair, watchstrap and or jewellery.
Telltale signs that the interview has gone well are increased eye contact, the repetition of your name and perhaps even some closer body space. A look of relief may also be a give-away sign – the process of choosing a candidate is stressful for interviewers, too.

If you have not been impressive, the interviewer will be trying not to behave in a familiar fashion. Telltale signs are avoiding eye contact and a parting handshake, which is firmer than the one, which you were greeted with.
Body language is a subject that we have all heard about, yet we are not aware of the effect that our own body language has on others. In fact, it is vital – and after someone has noticed it for the first time, even subconsciously, they are unlikely to change their opinion because of what you say. So, at an interview, take the trouble to get it right.

Look at the text, find and read out the sentences where verbs are used in the passive voice. Jazz. Have

you ever heard anything about jazz? We are sure you have. Jazz is type of music and the only art form that was created in the United States.Jazz was created by black Americans. Many blacks were broght from Africa to America as slaves.Different native songs were sung by the black slaves and the music of their homeland was played in America. Jazz is a mixture of many different kinds of music. It is made up of the music of West Africa, the work songs of the slaves and religious music. The first jazz bands were formed at the end of the 19th century. They played in bars and clubs in many towns and cities of the South, especially New Orleans. Nowadays New Orleans is an international seaport, and people from all over the world come to New Orleans to hear jazz.Improvisation is an important part of jazz. This means that jazz music is made up or created on the spot. This is why a jazz song can sound a little different each time it is played. With time jazz became more and more popular.By the 1920s,jazz was popular all over the United States . By the 1940s, you could not only hear jazz in clubs and bars ,but in concert halls too.Today jazz is played all over the world. On every continent special festivals are held where jazz muscians from the United States,Asia,Africa,South America and Europe meet and share their music. In this way jazz continues to grow and change.Let's hope that no matter what happens in music jazz will always be performed and listened to.

be safe on the road!
1)when you cross the street on foot
Look for a zebra crossing or a traffic lights crossing. Don't cross between parked cars. Stop before you walk onto the road. Stand on the pavement near the kerb. Listen and look both ways for traffic. Make sure it's clear and walk straight across the road. Don't run.
2)when you ride your bike
Make sure your bike is in good working condition. Check your brakes and tyres regularly. Wear a bicycle helmet. Ride with the flow of traffic, not against it. Use bike lanes. Wear bright clothes in daytime. Never carry a second person on your bike.
3)when you travel on a bus
Stand well back until the bus has stopped completely. Don't push others when you enter the bus. Sit down on your seat quietly and quickly. If there aren't free seats, use handgrips. Don't talk to the driver or annoy others on the bus. Don't lean out of the window. Don't wave from the window.
4)when you travel in a car
Always sit in the back seat if you are under twelve years old. Wear a seat belt. Don't block the rear view mirror. Don't play with the car door handles.
Always use the door on the pavement side to get out of the car.
