At the weekend we went on a London by bus. It was amazing! We've also been to Bridhton and Windsor. I haven't been homesick at all-being here is like being at home. You don't have time to miss home because thete are classes in the morning and lots of activities. You can go for a swim in the afternoons - don't worry, the pool is heated! I've spoken to my parents on the phone a few times, but the only thing l really miss is my mum's cooking.I've made so many new friends here! I've been here for two weeks and I've never had so much fun in my life!

Retirement – surely it’s a golden age when you can escape the daily grind of work and spend your time doing gardening, taking holidays and chatting with friends? Not for everyone. Some people love their work so much that they stay on into their 70s, 80s and 90s.
The factory worker
Dorothy Beckett, 93, has been working in a cake factory in Yorkshire, UK for more than 56 years. She works a 40-hour week, putting cakes in boxes, together with people who are 70 years younger than her. In 1945, aged 36, Dorothy set up the factory with her husband, Fred. Now, the business has a £4m annual turnover. “I’ve never wanted to retire,” she says. “It would be the end of me”.
The car dealer
William Spencer wanted to be a lawyer. But when he discovered that he didn’t have the right qualifications, he studied accountancy at night school instead and got a job in a car sales showroom. That was 72 years ago, and he is still there today! “I’m paid for my experience,” explains William, 91. “I help the young ones to sell. I advise the staff, introduce customers, arrange special deals, deal with problems, and make sure everyone is happy.”
The banker
“In the past year I’ve travelled to London, Paris and Milan for work,” says Gerald Lilley, sitting with a poetry book on his knee in his apartment in New York. “I’ve been to London three times, to Japan twice and to China, well, lots of times. When I’m not travelling, I like to be in the office every day at about 9.30. And I tend to leave at around 4.00 p.m. Mr Lilley is 94, and is senior advisor at one of the big investment banks. He finds the flights more tiring nowadays, especially after long days in meetings. “I suppose it’s my age,” he says, “but I have my evening to relax, have a drink and read German, French and English poetry.”

Traditionally people go to work. Sometimes it takes them hours to get to their offices. What a waste of time! So nowadays more and more people prefer to work at home. It seems much easier. You are not afraid of being late for work because of traffic jams or car breaks. You choose when to start working and when to stop. You may take a cup of coffee without haste and then turn on your computer There is no boss behind your back, in fact you are your own boss. So there are a lot of pluses, but also some minuses in this situation. It is difficult to manage your time effectively. When you are at home there is always a lot to do, and if you are not a very well-organized person you will postpone your work until it's dark outside. Then you have to work at night when other people have a rest. Besides, if you work at home you feel lonely. You don't see your colleagues, you don't exchange ideas with them, you feel like you are on a desert island. Some people are born team workers, when they talk to other people it inspires them, and they can produce brilliant ideas. For such people working at home is out of question!

41. Going to work is a waste of time.
42. When you work at home you decide when to have a break.
43. When you work at home your boss can't watch you all the time.
44. If you put off your work other people will have to do it.
45. Born team workers like working with their colleagues because it inspires them.

Interviewer: Daniel Ash, your new book is a collection of articles about people with strange jobs.

Daniel: Yes, I collected stories about unusual jobs from all over the world.
I : So you’re not talking about actors or shop assistant s.
D: No, all the people in the book have very strange jobs.
I: I see it’s organized into different industries, like the cleaning industry. But isn’t cleaning a normal job?
D: Normally, yes. But did you know there’s a man in America called Brad Fields and he cleans chewing gum off the Statue of Liberty? Well, actually, he’s got a company called Gumbusters. But that’s all they do – they clean gum off the streets and famous buildings of New York.
I: Oh, what a horrible job!
D: Yes, Americans chew 56 billion pieces of chewing gum a year. Then they throw most of it onto the street. That’s a lot of cleaning.
I: OK, that job is quite unusual .But what about in the food industry?
D: Well, when a company wants to advertise food they sometimes need a food stylist. Their job is to make food look good in advertisements.
I: I’ve never heard of that job before.
D: Well, there are only about 20 food stylists in Britain. For example, when we look at a picture of strawberries and cream we’re really looking at strawberries and white paint.
I: Really?
D: Yes, and they paint sausages with washing-up liquid, then coffee, to make them look natural.
I: So what’s the strangest job in your book, do you think?
D: Well, how about vermiculturalist?
I: What’s that?
D: A vermiculturalist is a worm farmer. These people manage farms that only have worms. No other animals, only worms.
I: But why?
D: Well, worms like eating rubbish and that’s good for the environment. So companies pay a worm farmer to clean up their rubbish.
I: Fascinating, but ugh, not a job for me. I see there’s also a chapter about artists. What strange jobs did you find in …
