The Norman Conquest
William the Conqueror's coronation did not go as planned. When the people shouted
"God Save the King" the nervous Norman guards at Westminster Abbey thought they were
going to attack William. In their fear they set fire to nearby houses and the coronation
ceremony ended in disorder.
Although William was now crowned king. His conquest had only just begun, and the
fighting lasted for another five years. There was an Anglo-Saxon rebellion against the
Normans every year until 1070.
The small Norman army marched from village to village, destroying places it could not
control, and building forts to guard others.
It was a true army of occupation for at least twenty years.
The north was particularly hard to control, and the Norman army had no mercy.
When the Saxons fought back, the Normans burnt, destroyed and killed. Between
Durham and York not a single house was left standing, and it took a century for the north to
recover.
Few Saxon lords kept their lands and those who did were the very small number who
had accepted William immediately. All the others lost everything.
By 1086, twenty years after the arrival of the Normans, only two of the greater landlords
and only two bishops were Saxon. William gave the Saxon lands to his Norman nobles.
After each English rebellion there was more land to give away.
His army included Norman and other French land seekers. Over 4.000 Saxon landlords
were replaced by 200 Norman ones.

All English universities except Oxford and Cambridge are fairly new. London University is the biggest of the modern English universities and has many

Union. All the states were different from each other and developed in different ways. The Northern states built factories and plants, and they also had a bigger population. The Southern states grew crops, which they then sold to Europe. The Southerners had huge cotton fields, where black slaves worked. There were about three and a half million slaves in the Southern states.

As you know, although it was written in the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal, these words were not true for the slaves. They lived in terrible conditions and had to work day and night. Even some Southerners understood that slavery was inhuman, but without it they were afraid their whole way of life would be destroyed.

The Northerners were strongly against slavery; a lot of them helped slaves escape from their owners. They also tried to pass new laws to abolish slavery. This idea became more and more popular, which didn't suit many people in the South. The Southern states felt that their own country was against them, and they started to think of breaking away from the United States.

When the time for the next elections came, it was clear that the most important question would be slavery. There were four candidates, but a Northerner called Abraham Lincoln won the election. In his inaugural address Lincoln warned the Southerners that they shouldn't destroy the union of the states, but they didn't listen. In February 1861 eleven Southern states formed their own union, which was called the Confederacy, but Abraham Lincoln wouldn't let them split up the country. And so the Civil War began.

The North (their army was called the Union Army) was actually more powerful than the South: as you remember, they had more men, and their factories produced weapons and supplied the Northern army with everything it needed. But the Confederacy had one big advantage: they didn't have to invade the North, they just had to protect their own land and homes. At that time a lot of people thought that it would be possible. So at first, the Confederacy had more luck: their men were better trained and fought with more spirit. Just as in the Revolutionary War. Americans from the South were once again fighting for their independence. The Union soldiers were getting tired. After they lost some important battles, the anti-slavery idea wasn't enough to inspire them any more. The Southerners felt that just one more big victory would be enough to win the war.

It was all decided here in Gettysburg in June 1863. The three-day battle was terrible and took the lives of more than fifty thousand men. On the fourth day, the Confederate commander, General Lee, had to admit that he had lost the battle.

After the battle, the American President, Abraham Lincoln, came to Gettysburg to honour the memory of those who had died there. He made a speech there, which later became famous as "The Gettysburg Address". In that speech Lincoln told his countrymen that it was for them to make sure "that the dead shall not have died in vain and that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." Two years later the Confederacy finally surrendered to the Union. As a result of the war, slavery was abolished and the United States of America was one country again.

A 14-year-old boy grimaces as he struggles to haul a giant fishing net from the angry waves that crash below him. For nine months, Bounali Simamora (Boo-nah-lee See-mamoor-ah) has toiled seven days a week, 10 hours a day, on a rickety fishing pier stranded in the middle of the ocean, 10 miles off the coast of Indonesia. As he sorts his catch, Bounali is careful to avoid the painful sting of jellyfish and sea snakes tangled in the net.
"I work from 8 in the morning until 6 at night", says Bounali, wiping sweat off his forehead as the sun beats down on him. "Every morning, I wake up, sort the fish, dry them. boil them, and put them into storage. Then, I wait for the tide to go down and do it again”
Bounali is of 120 million children worldwide, between the ages of 5 and 14, who are working instead of attending school.
Desperately poor, nearly 80 million of these children sacrifice their health and safety for just pennies a day- or nothing at all.
Many cultures throughout history have forced children to work. Before Congress passed the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, countless American children also toiled under brutal conditions.
“Child labor is cheap labor”, says Darlene Adkins of the Child Labor Coalition, an organization that works to end child labor abuses around the world. “Employers can pay children less than adults for the same work. Children are also more easily intimidated and controlled”.
For the thousands of children working on Indonesia's floating fisheries, for example, endless hours of grueling labor often earn them little more than $7 a month.
One-third of these children never receive a penny for labor that often leaves them battered and bruised.
With nothing but aspirin and bandages available to them, those who suffer serious injuries- often as a result of beatings from foremen-have no other choice than to stomach their pain.
Some try to escape the misery by swimming for shore, only to be swallowed by the fierce tides that rip through the ocean. Many kids, like 15-year-old Yuliagi(Yoo-yagee), feel that escape is futile.
