Killer quakes rattle Japan

Powerful earthquakes jolted central and eastern Japan Saturday evening, killing 18 person in Niigata Prefecture, injuring about 900 others, destroying a number of buildings and causing a bullet train to derail, government and police officials said.
The initial temblor that struck at 5:56 p.m. registered upper 6 on the 7-point Japanese scale in Ojiya, Niigata Prefecture, followed by aftershocks of the same scale, the Meteorological Agency said. It warned of further powerful aftershocks.
At 6 p.m., the government established a disaster task force at the prime minister's official residence.
In Tokamachi, Niigata Prefecture, a man in his 30s died after being buried under the rubble of a wall that collapsed at a restaurant. Some 50 to 60 injured people have been admitted to Niigata Prefectural Tokamachi Hospital, local government officials.
In Ojiya, one person was confirmed to have been killed in the disaster. A house collapsed and a landslide triggered by the quake buried a number of cars. About 30 injured people were rushed to a local hospital. Police officers rushed to the landslide scene to rescue people trapped in a car while trying to confirm if anybody in the collapsed house was injured.
Ojiya Municipal Government officials cannot immediately confirm the extent of damage because many roads in the town have been damaged, according to national government officials.
The Fire Defense Agency received a report that several people were buried alive in Kawaguchi, and is trying to confirm the information, officials said.
In Nagaoka, a fire broke out at three houses, municipal government officials said. One of the fires has already been extinguished. The local fire department dispatched ambulances to 20 locations to transport residents injured in the quake.
Two coaches of a 10-car-long bullet train, Toki No. 325 superexpress that left Tokyo for Niigata, derailed between Urasa and Naganoka station on the Joetsu Shinkansen Line and is at a standstill, its operator, East Japan Railway Co. said. However, the train did not topple over as it was slowing down toward Nagaoka Station, and none of some 150 passengers or crewmembers was injured in the accident.
All the expressways in Niigata Prefecture have been closed. Electric power supply has been completely suspended to at least some 250,000 households in extensive areas of Niigata Prefecture, including Ojiya and Kashiwazaki.
The focus of the quake, which is estimated at 6.8 on the open-ended Richter scale, was located about 20 kilometers below the ground in central Niigata Prefecture.
The temblor was followed by aftershocks, three of which registered upper 6 in some areas of Niigata Prefecture. (Compiled from Mainichi and wire reports, Japan)

do animals have any unexplained powers we are unaware of? For many years pet owners and scientists have reported examples of unusual behaviour in animals. They say that pets can anticipate their owners leaving for trips or returning home. These animals somehow know when they are going to be fed or taken for a walk. Does this mean anything or is it just a coincidence? Maybe it has nothing to
do with psychic powers, maybe pets just understand enought language to get the message? Surprisingly, little research has been done on these phenomena.
However, naturalists have carried out some experiments to investigate such behaviour. The evidence suggests that pets seem to react to their owners' thoughts and intentions but the mechanism of such communication remains unknown.
Another thing scientists are unable to explain is animals' sense of direction. How can pigeons find their way back home over hundreds of miles in unfamiliar places? The research into animal navigation has not helped to solve this mystery. In some experiments pigeons were taken away from home in closed vans to check whether they could remember their way. They were still able to find their way home easily. They could navigate on cloudy days and even at night which means they don't use the sun. And they couldn't smell their home because they were miles away from it.
It's quit remarkable to think that many animals escaped the great Asian tsunami in 2004. Elephants in Sri Lanka moved to high ground before the giant waves struck. Some dog owners were surprised by the fact that their pets refused to go to the beach for a walk on the day of the tsunami. Some local tribes on the islands were warned by the behaviour of the animals and moved away from the coast before the disaster. But how did the animals know?
They also seem to know about other disasters. Domestic animals often behave in an anxious or unusual way several hours before earthquakes strike. Similar behaviour occurs before avalanches or even explosions. The ability of animals to anticipate disasters could be of great help to people. In China, for example, the authorities encourage people to report unusual animals' behaviour and it has enabled cities to be evacuated before earthquakes, saving lots of lives.
Do we have any unexplained powers? Have you ever felt like someone was staring at you while you had your back turned to them? Have you ever felt like you knew what someone was going to say before they said it or even that you were familiar with a place that ypu knew you had never been to before? These may all be indications of the powers which we might have lost just because we no longer need them: telephones and television have replaced the feelings, maps and global positioning systems have replaced the sense of direction. But still we have much to learn from animals about their nature, and about our own.

Ответьте на вопросы. текст по английскому языку(CAN WE LIVE LONGER?) Scientists say that in the future people will live longer. With healthier lifestyles

and better medical care the average person will live to 90 or 100 instead of 70 and 75 like today. When the human genome is decoded, we'll probably live up to 150. Incurable diseases will be cured and "bad" genes replaced.
But that's tomorrow. And today, we continue to stuff ourselves with fast food — chips and pizzas, hamburgers and hot dogs. We are always in a hurry.
We have no time to enjoy a home-cooked dinner with family and friends. We want to eat now and we want to eat fast.
What is tasty is not always healthy. Doctors say that chips and pizzas are fattening, cola spoils our teeth and coffee shortens our lives.
If we eat too much, we'll become obese, and obesity leads to heart disease, diabetes and other serious illnesses. But the world today is getting fatter and fatter. America is the world's leader in obesity, but Europe is quickly catching up.
Lack of exercise is another serious problem. We spend hours in front of our computers and TV-sets. Few of us do morning exercises. We walk less, because we prefer to use cars or public transport.
Research shows, however, that young people who don't take enough exercise often suffer from heart attacks.
It's common knowledge that smoking and drinking can shorten our lives dramatically. Cigarette-smoking, for example, kills about 3 million people every year. Many of them die from lung cancer. Some aren't even smokers. They are people who live or work with heavy smokers.
Yet many young people smoke and drink. Why? One answer is that tobacco and drinks companies invest enormous sums of money in advertising their products. For them cigarettes and alcoholic drinks mean money. For us they mean disease and even death.
We all know that the healthier we are, the better we feel. The better we feel, the longer we live. So why not take care of ourselves?
