I.
"From today painting is dead!" decrarcd the French painter Paul
Delaroche in 1839, the year a process for making photographic images was
discovered. Delaroche voiced the expectations of many: that the
camera's ability to capture in an instant every detail of the real world
would spell the end of painting and drawing, and that photography was
the art of the future. At the same time the opposing camp claimed that
photography was a science, not an art — a mechanical process that could
never compete with the sensitive hand of the painter in feeling or
expression.

II. Since 1839 photography has become part of our
life, it is widely used in science, medicine, anthropology, geography,
journalism, advertising — but its close relationship with art has
continued.
In the early 20th century the famous American photographer
Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) put forward the idea of "pure" photography
with aesthetic value beyond its descriptive or utilitarian function.
This modernist view influenced a generation of photographers. While many
Americans found inspira¬tion in nature, in Europe photography
celebrated the rhythm and speed of mod¬ern society, the dynamism of the
machine age.
At the same time a certain group of photographers found
the unexpected in the commonplace. For example, a plant seen close up
looks machine-made, and a street scene from above becomes an almost
abstract pattern: ordinary things are transformed by a point of view.
Many
photographers now regarded as great masters would never have thought of
themselves as artists at all. Their aim was to document the life they
saw around them. Recording the lives of common people, they created
powerful and dignified images that spoke about the problems of the
society they lived in, about human suffering and hope.
In the second
half of the 20th century photography and art became more closely
connected. Pop artists like Andy Warhol (1928-87) often used
photographic images and concepts in their work.
In recent years, many
photographers have turned their attention from the world "out there" to
express themselves by staging their own events, constructing their own
images for the camera, inviting us to the private world of their
imagi¬nation.

Текст:

Mind the Gap" is not just an announcement that you'll hear in the London Underground when a train arrives at a station. Much more than just a warning about the "gap" between a carriage and the platform, it's a phrase that has entered popular culture and has become synonymous with London. People who have visited England's capital city say "Mind the Gap" to each other — often accompanied by knowing glances and subtle nods — while the rest of the world wonders what they are on about.
The phrase originated on the Northern Line, where the gaps between the curved train platforms at Embankment Station and the train itself were particularly large.
The biggest gaps one needs to mind are at Bank Station on the Central Line and at Waterloo Station on the Bakerloo Line. Basically, early in the history of Tube-line building the companies had to build their railways beneath public roads, so sharp curves were required at some points. Probably, the gap at Bank Station is so large because the tunnel diggers of the time had to turn from side to side a lot to miss the Bank of England's vaults.
One of the funniest urban legends about "Mind the Gap" is as follows:
Once you are on a train platform, beware! Approaching trains sometimes disturb the large Gappe bats that live in the tunnels. The Gappes were brought to London in the early 19th century by French smugglers and have proved impossible to get rid of. The announcement "Mind the Gappe!" is a signal that you should cover your hair and look Itowards the ceiling. Very few people have ever been killed by Gappes, though, and they are considered only a minor drawback to an otherwise excellent means of transport.

Belgium has always had a lot more than the faceless administrative buildings that you can see in the outskirts of its capital, Brussels. A number of beautify historic cities and Brussels itself offer impressive architecture, lively nightlife, first-rate restaurant and numerous other attractions for visitors. Today the old-fashioned idea of 'boring Belgium' has been well and truly forgotten, as more and more people discover its very individual charms for themselves.
B. Nature in Belgium is varied. The rivers and hills of the Ardennes in the southeast contrast sharply with the rolling plains which make up much of the northern and western countryside. The most notable features are the great forest near the frontier with Germany and Luxembourg and the wide sandy beaches of the northern coast.
C. It is easy both to enter and to travel around pocket-sized Belgium which is divided into the Dutch-speaking north and the French-speaking south. Officially the Belgians speak Dutch, French and German. Dutch is slightly more widely spoken than French, and German is spoken the least. The Belgians, living in the north will often prefer to answer visitors in English rather than French, even if the visitor's French is good.
D. Belgium has a wide range of hotels from 5-star luxury to small family pensions and inns. In some regions of the country, farm holidays are available. There visitors can (for a small cost) participate in the daily work of the farm. There are plenty of opportunities to rent furnished villas, flats, rooms, or bungalows for a holiday period. These holiday houses and flats are comfortable and well-equipped.
E. Belgian style of cooking is similar to French, based on meat and seafood. Each region in Belgium has its own special dish. Butter, cream, beer and wine are generously used in cooking. The Belgians are keen on their food, and the country is very well supplied with excellent restaurants to suit all budgets. The perfect evening out here involves a delicious meal, and the restaurants and cafes are busy at all times of the week.
F. As well as being one of the best cities in the world for eating out (both for its high quality and range), Brussels has a very active and varied nightlife. It has 10 theatres which produce plays in both Dutch and French. There are also dozens of cinemas, numerous discos and many night-time cafes in Brussels. Elsewhere, the nightlife choices depend on the size of the town, but there is no shortage of fun to be had in any of the major cities.
G. There is a good system of underground trains, trams and buses in all the major towns and cities. In addition, Belgium's waterways offer a pleasant way to enjoy the country. Visitors can take a one-hour cruise around the canals of Bruges (sometimes described as the Venice of the North) or an extended cruise along the rivers and canals linking the major cities of Belgium and the Netherlands.

перевести пожалуйто((((((((((((( Today most of us are pretty used to the moon, There it is in the sky — crescent (растущая) or half or full...

Years ago people lived by the changing phases of moon. They kept calendars and holidays by the moon. . They planted seed in the spring's new moon and harvested in the autumn's full moon. And fisherman all over the world told the morrow's (завтрашний) weather by the moon. For many people the moon long remained a mysterious heavenly body that could bring good fortune or ill. It could bring good luck if it was a new moon and you had silver coins in your pocket to jingle (звон). A new moon was also the time to make a wish, take a trip, go a-courting, or cut your hair. But the moon could bring bad luck, too. If you saw a woman combing her hair in the light of the full moon, or you planted seed during the full moon, you would have bad luck. Almost everyone believed if you slept with moonlight on your face, you'd go crazy. Indeed any people believe this that we get the word lunatic from the word for moon, luna. Today, of course, we know that none to these things is true. You can asleep in the moonlight and wake up as normal as you were yesterday. You might harvest your crops in the full moon with poor results or harvest in a sickle moon and do well. You might start your vacation on during the new moon and have a flat tire right away. Nevertheless, there it is... the moon, hanging up there in the sky, seeming to change its shape before our very eyes. No wonder people continue to be fascinated by it. Since the beginning of time, they have tried to explain how it got there and why it behaves the way it does. The first people to try to explain the creation and behaviour of the moon were tribal poets and storytellers. There are hundreds of folktales about the moon.

read the following "angry" letter to the editor. Write a letter in defense of technological progress. Use the arguments from the box and/ or

your own ones.

Dear Editor,
I really don't think that readers need your journal any more. In your articles you write about new achievements of scientists and about all those "man made wonders". I'm strongly against the propaganda of technological progress. It has done people more harm than good. It has created the nuclear bomb, it has made lots of animal species extinct, and now it's destroying the ozone layer and causing global warming. It will bring us to collapse very soon.
I demand that scientific research of any kind should be prohibited, and journals like yours should be closed. People need fresh air and clean water and don't need any technological progress.
Sincerely your,
John Lester

Dear Mr Lester
I've read your letter on the technological progress but cannot agree with you. Though technology affects nature and the environment, it would be unfair to say that they don't do people anything good.

However, you are right that we should do something to stop the negative effects of the technological progress. We all need to think about it and be reasonable and constructive.
