ПОМОГИТЕЕЕЕЕЕ!!! A skyscraper is a very tall, continuously habitable building. There is no official definition or a precise cutoff height above which a

building may clearly be classified as a skyscraper. However, as per usual practice in most cities, the definition is used empirically, depending on the relative impact of the shape of a building to a city's overall skyline. Thus, depending on the average height of the rest of the buildings and/ or structures in a city, even a building of 80 meters height (approximately 262 ft) may be considered a skyscraper provided that it clearly stands out above its surrounding built environment and significantly changes the overall skyline of that particular city. The word skyscraper originally referred to a nautical term tall mast or its main sail on a sailing ship. The term was first applied to buildings in the late 19th century as a result of public amazement at the tall buildings being built in Chicago and New York City. The structural definition of the word skyscraper was refined later by architectural historians, based on engineering developments of the 1880s that had enabled construction of tall multi-story buildings. This definition was based on the steel skeleton—as opposed to constructions of load-bearing masonry, which passed their practical limit in 1891 with Chicago's Monadnock Building. Philadelphia's City Hall, completed in 1901, still holds claim as the world's tallest load-bearing masonry structure at 167 m (548 ft). The steel frame developed in stages of increasing self-sufficiency, with several buildings in Chicago and New York advancing the technology that allowed the steel frame to carry a building on its own. Today, however, many of the tallest skyscrapers are built almost entirely with reinforced concrete. Pumps and storage tanks maintain water pressure at the top of skyscrapers. A loose convention in the United States now draws the lower limit of a "skyscraper" at 150 meters (500 ft). A skyscraper taller than 300 meters (984 ft) may be referred to as supertall. In the United States, the supertall convention is 100 stories, which is equal to 1,000 feet. Shorter buildings are still sometimes referred to as skyscrapers if they appear to dominate their surroundings. The somewhat arbitrary term skyscraper should not be confused with the slightly less arbitrary term highrise, defined by the Emporis Standards Committee as "A high-rise building is a multi-story structure with at least 12 floors or 35 meters (115 feet) in height."[1] All skyscrapers are highrises, but only the tallest highrises are skyscrapers. Habitability separates skyscrapers from towers and masts. Some structural engineers define a highrise as any vertical construction for which wind is a more significant load factor than weight. Note that this criterion fits not only highrises but some other tall structures, such as towers. The word skyscraper often carries a connotation of pride and achievement. The skyscraper, in name and social function, is a modern expression of the age-old symbol of the world center or axis mundi: a pillar that connects earth to heaven and the four compass directions to one another.[2] 1. A skyscraper is :1) an extremely high building. 2)a building of medium height. 3) a small building 2. The connotation of the word SKYSCRAPER is: 1)positive. 2)negative.3) neutral. 3. We can call a skyscraper supertall if it is: 1) 100 metres. 2)200 metres. 3)300 metres. 4. The term SKYSCRAPER came into use wirh buildings:1)in the beginning of the twentieth century. 2) in the end of the nineteenth century. 3)un the middle of the twentieth century. 5. The terms HIGHRISE and SKYSCRAPER mean: 1)the same. 2) have some difference in meaning. 3) are very close in meaning. 6. A skyscraper can't be lower then 1) 50 metres. 2)100. 3)150

Проверьте грамотность! 1. Is art important for us nowadays? In the modern society some people recognize

that art is very important. Others don’t think so.

On the one hand works of art make our life more interesting, more fascinating, because artists give feelings, emotions, experience with the help of their music, paintings, sculptures. Moreover art develops our spiritual life. Without art people become pour inside.

On the other hand I know some people saying art is useless and boring. They say it’s waste of time to go to the theatres, galleries and listen to symphonies. They prefer others kinds of activity. Moreover some people don’t understand impressionists, surrealists and others schools of art. They think such works of art affect the mind and the psyche of people.

To sum up there is no agreement about the role of art in our life.

Personally I think art is very important in our life. Each respectable person should know about famous composers, painters, architects, sculptors. And he should love and respect art.

2. Why is pollution a big problem for people now?

Nowadays the situation in our environment is very difficult and dangerous. A lot of wastes from factories, electric power stations, chemical industry, and heavy industry go into the air, soil and water.

The water in rivers has become polluted in many places. If people drink this water they can get ill and even die. Fish in such rivers become toxic and dangerous to eat. A lot of trees on the banks die.

On the other hand some people don’t think it’s a big problem. In fact, we can’t close all factories and prohibit using ships in the rivers. Moreover it’s impossible to look after all people pouring domestic waste into rivers.

In any case people must do everything possible to keep the rivers clean.

In my opinion it’s very important to save the water for ourselves and for next generations. We should be nature’s best friends and take care of it.

I love this quiz show a lot! It transmitted on ITV and is hosted by Chris Tarrant, my favourite TV presenter. Most of all I like the cash prize which is very, very large : one million pounds! Fantastic! But players can get the prize only if they correctly answer 15 multiple-choice questions. If they are unsure of the answer to a question, they can use one of three "lifelines" : "Phone a friend", "Ask the audience" and "50:50". The best moment of the show is when a player refuses to answer the question and then any TV viewer can play Walkaway SMS game and answer the question for the chance to win a 1,000! I think I will try one day. Once, my form teacher said that quiz shows were bad for education. Maybe, Who wants to be a millionaire? is not a very educational show but it is rather informative and very entertaining!

I don`t watch TV a lot, but when Star Academy is on I can`t get enough! Star Academy is a pop music talent contest. Contestants live in a boarding school and attend singing and dancing classes and are filmed with hidden cameras day and night. It`s very entertaining! Once a week, the contestants take part in live music performances. They are all competing ... that`s what makes the show so interesting! Each week either the group members, or the millions of TV viewers, decide which person is eliminated until there is one winner. The eliminations are always so exciting because you don`t know whether your favourite person will stay in or will go. The winner is awarded a record deal or a cash prize and, what is more important, the winner gets the chance to become a successful music artist. I love everything about this show!

помогите сократить текст (из 7-8 предложений) на анг.яз.сохраняя главную мысль The kids are all right. Young people at work can

now expect opportunity, responsibility, respect-and fun.

Youth is a time for fun. In one American playground inFlorida, there are basketball courts and volleyball nets. Inside, there are bright colours, Nerf guns and a games room with pingpong. This is not a school, but the offices of CapitalOne, one ofAmericaslargest credit-card firms. The firm gives each department a monthly fun budget. The same sort of thing can be found across corporateAmericathese days. The kids have taken over. It is technology that drives business today, and dot.com culture is everywhere. The young are now the rising power in the workplace. Take Microsoft, a business with 40,000 mostly young employees: the dress code is anything goes as long as you´re clean. People wear shorts and have blue hair – sometimes even in management. The typical workplace scene features mid-afternoon hockey, video games and techno music on headphones. Companies want to attract and keep a younger workforce because of its technical skills and enthusiasm for change. So youth culture is becoming part of office culture. This may be no bad thing . Along with the company fun budget come things that matter more deeply to young people: opportunity, responsibility, respect. In the past, it was the middle-aged who ruled. At work, grey hair, years of loyal service and seniority counted most. Now things are changing. Older workers will not disappear, but they will have to share power with the young. In the old days companies grew slowly; with success came conservative corporate values. Now the world´s largest firms can crash at any moment. The pace of change is increasing. And change favours the young: they learn and relearn faster and will risk more to try new things. Many companies no longer have seniority-based hierarchies. People can get to the top faster. They don´t have to spend years showing respect for their superiors. It is more important that they are able to understand e-business and have the courage to ask why? Loyalty to the company is less important than talent. Employees stay only when there are challenges and rewards. Changing jobs frequently is now a sign of ambition and initiative. All this is a good thing. Young people are at their most creative stage in life. Now they have more opportunity to put their ideas and energy into practice.
