April 22 is earth day. People all over the world think about our planet. They think about air, water, plants and animals on the Earth. They say our planet is in danger. Many people do not know how to protect animal and plant worlds, how to keep the waters clean and the air fresh. But they are ready to do it. They try and help nature.

Water is very important for life on the Earth. It is in oceans, seas, rivers and lakes. There is much water on our planet and at the same time there is little water on it. It is so because very little water on the Earth is good for drinking. In many rivers and lakes water is very dirty. Sometimes people cannot swim even in the sea because the sea and the seaside are not clean. In many places water is not drinkable. It is dangerous to use it when you cook. Even fish die in such water.

For example Lake Baikal is the deepest freshwater lake on the Earth. It is 1741 metres deep. The lake is very beautiful but now it is in great danger, because of the factories which are near it. At some places the water in the lake is so dirty that it can kill animals and plants in Baikal and near it.

The way people live has changed the climate on our planet. Nowadays the temperature is rising. You do not have real Russian winter in Moscow any more. In the north of Europe the climate has become milder and warmer too.

If the temperature grows by 3-4 degrees it will be impossible to live on the planet.

Some people’s activities do a lot of harm to the forests. People cut down trees to build farms, homes and roads. Many animals and plants lose their homes. This is bad for the Earth’s air too. Modern plants and factories send a lot of smoke into air. This is also very bad, because nowadays it’s difficult to breathe in big cities.

So, the problem now is to protect life on the Earth, to save our planet for people.

While at university, they had dreams of getting an exciting, challenging job. Therefore, life after university ends up being quite disappointing for a lot of graduates. All of the above is beginning to make British people question whether a university degree is really worth the money. Even before the credit crunch started, the BBC stated, 'The number of British students at UK universities has fallen for the first time in recent history... from 1.97 million in 2007 to 1.96 million last year [2008]’. It looks like the figures will continue to decline, since loan companies are now telling some student that there are no loans available for them. Forecasts are that between 2009-19 there will be fall of 6% in the number of 18-25 year-old university applicants across the UK. Students have always been seen as not having a lot of money, but “student poverty” is now considered a real problem in the UK. Most British students expect to get a loan, part-time job or summer job. Worse than that, however, is the fact student leaders report there are increasing numbers of students turning to crime to support themselves financially. By contrast, things are now easier for students from other countries coming to study in the UK, since the value of the British pound has fallen. More international students come to Britain each year. The British universities offer more and more of the available places to richer international students rather than poorer British students. Some British people fear that, one day, there won’t be any university places left for British students at all.

situated in North Wales, where steel6 and chemicals are produced.



Ship-building is an important
industry in the United Kingdom. The main ship-building centers are
London, Glasgow in Scotland, Belfast in Northern Ireland and some
others.



Sheep can be seen in many parts
of England and Scotland, and there are a lot of cattle-farms and
farms where milk, butter and cheese are produced. But only half of
the food the country needs is produced by British agriculture.



Wheat is grown in the east of
England. Vegetables are grown in all parts of England, especially in
the south. Potatoes are grown everywhere on the British Isles.



Some kinds of fruit, especially
apples, can grow in the south where the temperature is higher and
there are more hours of sunshine than in the northern regions.
