It's been nearly 35 years now since I left my parents' home at 19 and entered into a life without television. In all the time I have never had a tv in any place I've —1 called home.

I have read more than 2,000 books, seen more than 1,000 movies, spent 5,000 hours in conversation with some 10,000 people, spent thousands of hours in public service to my community, traveled to 18 countries and learned bits — and snatches of 15 languages.

I am less inclined to talk in sitcom cliches, less likely to mention brand names, and less likely to be afraid to go outside at night. I know far more about world events, speak better English, know more of my neighbors, have more — opinions about everything, and am more inclined to help a stranger in need.

You will probably laugh a little at that list, but there is a clear relationship between the amount of tv viewing one does and all of the qualities I've described. After all, being the audience for a tv is a passive act; scientists told the Los Angeles Times that on average, a child watching television slips into the passive brain state within 30 seconds of beginning to watch television. Most adults I know seem to start out that way.

For me, watching television is an exercise in observation; I am aware of camera angles, staae-settina. editing and message-shaping more than of what tv tries to sell me; indeed, it doesn't take much to become a sophisticated tv viewer — all you have to do is turn it off for a while to see how empty and manipulative it is when you turn it on again.

That unreality was never more painfully real than the time I watched Mike Wallace recap key moments of the '70s during a New Year's Eve broadcast. The most powerful of the images was of the terrorists at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. I re-experienced the horror of the murders of the Israeli athletes growing more deeply involved in the story with every passing second.

With no warning, a Miller Beer commercial suddenly blared onto the screen, and it was as though a fully-loaded garbage truck had plowed into my gut. I almost vomited with the shock _ and sense of violation.

Admittedly, I have spent a few great moments in front of the tube. Live [laiv] coverage of the Detroit riots in 1966, the assassination of Lee Harvey Oswald by Jack Ruby in 1963, and the end of President Reagan's first State of the Union address might qualify, though.

Each of those events, I would note, was broadcast live, free of commercial interruption. But I suspect that television executives would decide whether to show Jack Ruby's act today. That's another problem with tv: It's carefully controlled and information is fed to Americans by just a few huge corporations, and thev seem unable to understand it.

April 23-29 is National TV-Turnoff Week, and I urge everyone who wants to see another world in this lifetime — namely, this L one — to join those of us who have learned how to live in it.

A business is usually divided into a number of departments, each being responsible for a specific range of work (such as production, finance, personnel,

marketing). The structure of the departments and sub-departments can be shown in an organisation chart. This shows the departments how they are related to each other, and the lines of communication between them.
Organisation charts differ from personnel charts. These show the posts held by individuals, their job titles and, sometimes, the span of control. The charts, therefore, indicate how responsibilities are divided between different individuals, and who is responsible to whom.
Despite their advantages, the charts have three serious limitations.
The amount of work involved in running a large business is usually too much for the senior managers to cope with entirely on their own. This means that responsibilities, authority and duties have to be passed "down the line" to others – i.e. to middle management and first-line management. This is known as delegation. One of the arts of management is to know to whom particular tasks can be delegated – and to whom they should not. Proper delegation means the spreading of the work load. It also means that particular tasks can be delegated to those who have special experience or qualifications to deal with them. However, there is always the risk that the person a task is delegated to will prove to be incompetent. There is also the risk that unless there is proper "reporting back", the senior manager will not know what is going on.
Plans are pointless unless there is a periodic check – a control – on what is being achieved. Whereas planning is concerned with the future, control is concerned with the (immediate) past. Problems can arise at any point during the implementation of a plan. Furthermore, unless a specific check is made on them, they can go unnoticed for so long that they become impossible to remedy. The controls should therefore be carefully planned so that they spot-light the problems which are likely to arise. Also, they should take place regularly.
There are several different types of control. Some can be measured in
specific "quantity" terms. With these, an actual figure proposed in the plan
(often known as the budgeted or standard figure) can be compared with the
figure actually achieved. For example, the planned quantity of raw material
expected to be used, together with its anticipated cost, can be compared
with the actual quantity used and the actual cost. Similarly, the "standard"
(i.e. anticipated) wage rates and the time a job is expected to take can be
compared with the actual.

In any occupation discipline is more important than talent.

In the modern world some people think that congenital gift is the most significant quality for every profession. However, other believe that compliance with rules and procedures are more serious. But in my point of view it is not really true.

I personally think that every human has a talent. To begin with, it does not matter which, but each of them is really important in our life. As well, following discipline is the part of success, but not in all areas. Some people have a predilection to art. For example, many art workers, they are dependent on muse. For this reason, discipline is not important in occupation.

On the other hand, many business people are sure about their luck thanks to planning and responsibility. This kind of work has many set rules. Therefore, many successful people are really punctial.

However, I do not agree with the opposing opinion. Certainly, life is very unpredictable and hard. Thus, gliding is not the best way in every specialization. History shows many doers of art, who were a professionals in their deals. For example, Alexander Abdulov not always learnt a text of script before survey. He can put his text somewhere on the film set and periodically pry into it. Even so, he was a great actor.

In conclusion, I want to stress that talent is more foreground. Discipline can come with time. Because as a famous proverb says: “Talanted person is talanted in all”.

Gerzon believes that conflict exists in nearly every part of life. Conflict can occur when people work together. Leaders need to understand only one part of the company. Twentieth-century leaders rarely accepted responsibility for their mistakes. People who disagree with management feared they will lose their jobs. Good mediators are likely to be respected by staff. Using mediation to resolve conflict takes time. A competitive team needs one good leader.

Understand your team and the rest is easy

Mark Gerzon, author of «Leading Through Conflict: How Successful Leaders Transform Differences into Opportunities», has noticed that most things in life involve conflict.

Some of these conflicts emerge when people come together from different backgrounds where views, cultures and beliefs may not be shared by their colleagues. Today some 63,000 companies are operating internationally, employing 90 million people and responsible for a quarter of the world's gross national product.

'We simply cannot manage a whole company, a whole community, and certainly not a whole planet, with leaders who identify with only one part.' he writes. He therefore believes that future corporate leaders will need to be experts in mediation rather than the controlling style of leaders which was apparent during the 20th century.

These controlling leaders always blamed someone else for failures and achieved success only because employees were frightened of losing their jobs. Sadly such methods still exist in some companies. Similarly, people who question management in companies where employee morale is very low are seen as trouble makers and are often dismissed by the company. But suppose they have a point? Trouble makers are likely to respect a leader with good mediation skills because they feel that someone is listening to their complaints.

One problem with mediation in leadership is that it takes time, something this highly competitive world has little of. That is why the most competitive teams need individuals who are all capable of leadership. People need to talk all the time about their various tasks and work towards the same objective, and any conflicts should be managed in a way that does not disrupt the harmony of the team.

Read the situation and make notes which will help you to write the letter.

a local newspaper has recently published a series of articles about young people. in most of the articles, young people are described as irresponsible, rude and looking only for cheap entertainment. these opinions are mainly based on a few recent incidents in the local discotheque. you're going to write a letter to the editor expressing your disapproval not only with the editorial policy of treating the topic, but also whith the perception of young people.

make notes which will help you to write the letter :
-reason(s) for writing your opinion;
-your arguments + suggestions;
-opposing views & your counterarguments;
-closing remarks.
