The Wild West

At the beginning of the 17th century the first colonies appeared in America. Many of them were English colonies, for example, New England. But there were also Spanish and German colonies there. African negroes arrived as slaves in 1619 and began working on plantations situated in the South. They grew rice and tobacco.
There were 13 colonies in America in 1733. The English King, who lived far away in England was the King of New England and other colonies. The colonists in America didn't like that. They didn't want to depend on the English King or on England. The Americans began to fight for their independence and got it. George Washington became the first president of the United States. In the 18th century some Americans went to the west to look for new lands and the story of «Wild West» began. In the 19th century people went west to look for gold. They built new settlements and new towns in these lands. Some people were lucky but some were not as they couldn't find any gold. Then they left the towns, so they became empty. Now these «ghost towns» are very popular with tourists. Life in the Wild West was full of danger. The Native Americans in the west didn't like the white people who took their land. Sometimes they attacked them. There were bears and other wild animals and people had to have guns. Today many Americans still keep a gun in their houses and all American police officers have guns. Another tradition from the «Wild West» is «cowboy» clothes. People in the West led a difficult and dangerous life, so. the clothes was very important as it helped people to get on. Cowboy spent much time outdoors. They usually wore hats, boots and jeans. Hats protected their faces and eyes from the hot sun. Boots helped to walk through long grass. There were many dangerous snakes and the boots protected people from them. Boots also made riding a horse easier. In the middle of the 19th century in the city of San Francisco there lived a tailor called Levi Strauss. He made special clothes — strong trousers called «jeans». Very soon cowboys started to wear jeans. Now people wear jeans in America and all over the world.

sailing ship. There was a terrible storm. He was the only person who did not drown.

Robinson found some useful things on the ship: some food and some clothes, some carpenter`s tools and two guns.

Robinson reached an island with his things. The island was beautiful but no one lived there.

Robinson was alone. He watched as the ship sank.

Robinson cut down trees and built a small house. He found animals and fruit to eat. He found some goats on the island and started a small farm. He had a parrot, wich he used to talk to. He learned how to cook and make clothes. He grew corn and learned how to make bread. But he was alone on the island for twenty-four years.

Tnen, one day, a man came to the island, and Robinson saved his life. He called this man Friday because that was the day when he found him. Robinson taught Friday to speak English, and Friday helped Robinson on tne farm.

Finally, after twenty-eight years, Robinson was rescued by a passing ship. He returned to England and Friday went with him. They were friends for the rest of their lives.

younger. They were both fine, upstanding, people and their children, two sons and three girls, were handsome and strong. But the master of the house was not George Meadows; it was his mother. Her word was law in the house and on the farm. One day Mrs. George stopped me on my way home. (Her mother-in-law was the only Mrs. Meadows we knew; George’s wife was only known as Mrs. George.) ‘’Whoever do you think is coming here today?’’ she asked me. ‘’Uncle George Meadows.’’ ‘’Why, I thought he was dead.’’ I heard the story of Uncle George
Meadows and Tom, his younger brother, had both courted Mrs. Meadows when she was Emily Green, fifty years and more ago, and when she married Tom, George had gone away to sea. Mrs. George asked me to look in and see him. Of course I accepted. I found the whole family assembled. When I arrived, they were sitting in the great old kitchen, Mrs. Meadows in her usual chair by the fire, very upright, and I was amused to see that she had put on her best silk dress. On the other side of the fireplace sat an old man. He was very thin and he had lost nearly all his teeth. I shook hands with him. It was strange to look at them, these two old people who had not seen one another for half a century, and to think all that long time he had loved her and she had loved another. ‘’Have you ever been married, Captain Meadows?’’ I asked. ‘’I said I’d never marry anyone but you, Emily, and I never have.’’ He said this as mere statement of fact. ‘’Well, one thing you’ve not done, George, as far as I can see,’’ said Mrs.
Meadows, ’’and that’s to make a fortune.’’ ‘’I’m not one to save money. But one thing I can say for myself: if I had the chance of going through my life again I’d take it.’’ I looked at him with admiration and respect. He was a toothless, crippled, penniless old man, but he had made a success of live, for he had enjoyed it. Next morning when I came to the garden I saw Mrs. Meadows picking flowers. ‘’ How’s Caption Meadows?’’ I asked her. ‘’When Lizzie took him in a cup of tea this morning she found he was dead.’’ ‘’Dead?’’ ‘’Yes. Died in his sleep. Well, I’m glad he came back,’’ she said. ‘’After I married Tom Meadows and George went away, the fact is I
was never quite sure that I’d married the right one.’’
