Космонавты утверждают, что с орбиты хорошо видны только два сооружения – Великая Китайская стена и Купол тысячелетия в Лондоне. И если первое сооружение стоит уже немало столетий, то лондонское чудо появилось совсем недавно.Всё началось в 1995 году с идеи вице-премьера Великобритании Майкла Хезлтайна. Хезлтайн посчитал, что его страна должна лучше всех подготовиться к встрече нового тысячелетия и предложил построить к этой дате грандиозное сооружение. План вице-премьера состоял в возведении огромного купола, под которым можно было бы проводить самые масштабные в мире мероприятия. Идея англичанам понравилась и страна принялась за работу.Самый большой купол в мире был сооружён к 2000 году. В этом архитектурном чуде много символичных деталей. Его диаметр – 365 метров, по числу дней в году. Поддерживают крышу 12 стометровых колонн, что совпадает с числом месяцев в календаре. И стоит купол на нулевом меридиане, который даёт начало географическим координатам планеты Земля.Купол тысячелетия действительно получился грандиозным. Он раскинулся на площади 8 гектаров и способен принять под свою крышу более 20 000 посетителей. Весь 2000 год под Куполом проходила выставка Millennium Experience, посвящённая третьему тысячелетию. Но для государства гигант оказался убыточным. Из-за финансовых трудностей в 2007 году сооружение было продано в частные руки за символическую сумму в 1 фунт.Сегодня Купол тысячелетия стал огромной развлекательной площадкой. Под его крышей уютно расположились музей, рестораны, кинотеатры. Здесь проводятся спортивные и культурные мероприятия мирового масштаба. Огромный купол нашёл своё место в современном мире.
