Aesop and the traveller
Aesop, a Greek philosopher, was famous for his jokes. One day Aesop was out for a walk when he saw a man. The man was lost. The man greeted Aesop and asked him, "How long will it take me to get to the town?" "Go," said Aesop. The traveler didn't understand the reply. "I know that I have to go," he said and repeated his question, but Aesop's reply was the same. "Go," he said again very politely. The traveller went away. "The man is mad," he decided. After the traveller had gone some distance, Aesop shouted after him, "You'll get to the town in two hours."The traveller came back to Aesop and asked: "Why didn't you tell me that before?" "I didn't tell you because I didn't know how fast you could walk," Aesop replied.

A trip to London is never complete without a visit to the Tower of London. The site dates back to the 11 th century arid is guarded by the Yeoman warders, or 'Beefeaters!

King Henry Vlll first introduced Beefeaters in 1485

1)When he used them as bodyguards. Their duties included

looking after the prisoners in the Tower and guarding the Crown Jewels. These days though, their main role is to act as guides for

the many tourists 2)that visit the Tower every year. They also

take care of the eight big black ravens 3)That live in the tower.

There are 36 Yeoman Warders at the Tower and they are all

men 4)Whose were in the armed forces for 22 years or more.

They live in the Tower with their families.

The Beefeaters are most famous for their striking red and gold uniform, but they actually only wear this on formal occasions. Most of the time they wear a dark blue uniform with red trimmings*.

No one is exactly sure 5) where the name 'Beefeater' comes from.

One theory says that the warders used to be paid with meat instead of money! Others say that the name comes from the French word bvffetier. Buffetiers were guards in the palace of French Kings. They protected the King's food.

Pocket Money.
A number of people believe that pocket money teaches teenagers to be responsible. Others say that teenagers are too young to deal with money and that their parents should just buy them what they need.
Many parents wonder whether to give pocket money to their children and how much to give. Most Moms and Dads think that pocket money helps the child learn to handle money sensibly. However, pocket money may become a battleground if not handled correctly from the very start.
Personally, I think that by giving pocket money parents help children learn to manage money while they are young. It also helps them make choices and feel that they are important members of the family. Even a small amount can give a child the feeling of responsibility and independence. Parents can suggest the child keeping a little book in their money box to record ins and outs. This will help with their mathematics and will encourage them to save money.

Сократите текст (для пересказа), но чтоб смысл не изменился Lately television has been criticized for being a threat to the societys

moral standarts as it shows too much sex and violence. There are too many war films and, evem worse ,too many stories about secret agents , criminal and the police, who shoot people as if they were rabbits. Naturally a lot of people dont want television to show sex, violence and cruelty. They say such programmes ,if they have to be shown at all ,should never be run at prime time or any other time when young children can see them. People also criticize bad-taste programmes where rude jokes are made or where people are made to fight over a sum of money forgetting all shame ,or programmes spying on people at the most intimate moments of their lives. Such programmes give examples of humiliation and bad taste. Some TV programmes are politically engaged and present the views and ideas of one group of people instead of presenting different views. Above all most of TV views dislike TV commercials that can spoil the impression of a good programme by interrupting it.

A flea is a very small and troublesome insect that can drive a dog crazy with all the itching and scratching it causes. So what do fleas have to do with markets and shopping? No one is quite sure, as the origins of the term 'flea market' are not certain. Some people believe it originates from the Dutch language, others think it stems from French. But there is one thing that almost everybody agrees on: there's no better place to shop if you are in search of a good bargain.

There are countless flea markets all around the world, and they are especially popular in Europe. One of the busiest markets in Europe is in the town of Lille, Northern France: La Braderie. With two hundred kilometres of open air stalls, this flea market offers a massive diversity of things to buy at reduced prices. Unfortunately, this amazing event, which has over a million visitors, is only an annual event which happens during the first weekend of September. Another shopper's paradise is in Russia. Moscow has many flea markets but the Vernisazh flea market at Izmailovsky Park is perhaps the most famous. There is almost nothing that you can't find there, especially if you are a tourist looking for authentic Russian souvenirs to bring back home.

But flea markets are not just places where tourists can buy inexpensive things. The Annex Antiques Fair and Flea Market in New York, USA, is a trendy market which has been attracting famous Hollywood stars as well as people living in the area ever since it opened. So, as you see, flea markets offer something for everyone!

On July 2nd 1900 crowds of people living in a German town gathered to watch the very first Zeppelin airship go up in the air. Similar airships had been around for about 50 years but the Zeppelin was the first airship with a special design that allowed it to travel faster than those built before. The Zeppelin's inventor was Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin. In 1910, the airship Deutschland became the world's first commercial airship. By the start of World War I in 1914, German Zeppelins had travelled over 172,000 km and carried over 34,000 passengers and crew safely.
