Hi, I'm Sabrina.

(Searching/Having searched) for a student house, I found a room in a house five minutes away from the University. (Е-mailing/ Having e-mailed) the girl, who advertised it, I found out that her parents had bought the house for her to live in. I met her and we got on fine, so I decided that I'd take the room. The day we were signing the contract her parents were there (explaining/explained) that they were nice easy-going people. I was (pleasing / pleased) with what I saw and heard.

(Having read/Read) the contract, I realised that it ran till June. I didn't need the room till that late, so I explained that I'd like to move out in April. I was told this wasn't a problem, and it didn't matter what the contract said. So I happily signed, (thought/thinking) I'd been so lucky to have found a place with such great people.

It turned out it wasn't so great. The girl, whose parents bought the house, was very unfriendly, (leaving/having left) notes around the house and (complaining/having complained) about every little thing.

We decided to have a special celebration of Mother’s Day. We thought it was a fine idea. It made us realize how much Mother had done for us for years, and all the efforts and sacrifices that she had made for our sake…

… It was our plan to make it a day like Christmas, and so we decided to decorate the house with flowers. We asked Mother to do it, because she always does it.

The two girls thought it would be a nice thing to dress on our best for such a big occasion, and so they both got new hats. Father had bought silk ties for himself and for us, boys. We were going to get Mother a new hat too, but it turned out that she liked her old hat better than a new one.

After breakfast we decided that we would hire a motor car and take Mother for a beautiful drive away into the country. Mother is hardly ever able to have a treat like that, because she is busy in the house nearly all the time.

But we changed the plan a little bit. We all felt that it would be nicer to have a definite purpose. It turned out that Father had just got a new rod the day before, and he said that Mother could use it if she wanted to: in fact, he said it was practically for her, only Mother said she would rather watch him fish than fish herself.

So we got everything arranged for the trip. Mother cut up some sandwiches and packed all up in a basket for us.

When the car came to the door, it turned out that we couldn’t all get in. Father said that he could stay at home and work in the garden. There was a lot of dirty work that he could do. He said that he wanted us to be happy and have a big day. The girls said that Mother had only to say the word and they’d gladly stay at home and work.

At the end it was decided that Mother would stay at home and have a lovely restful day round the house. It turned out anyway that Mother didn’t care for fishing and also it was just a little bit cold and fresh out-of-doors, though it was lovely and sunny, and Father was afraid that Mother might take cold if she came.

So we all drove away and Mother stood and watched us as long as she could see us.

We had the loveliest day. Father and the boys fished, the girls met quite a lot of people. We all had a splendid time.

It was quite late when we got back. The dinner was ready. It was grand. Mother had to get up and down during the meal fetching things back and forward, but at the end Father noticed it and said she simply mustn’t do it, that he wanted her to spare herself.

When the dinner was over all of us wanted to help to clear the things up and wash the dishes, only Mother said that she would really much rather do it.

It was quite late when it was all over, and when we all kissed Mother before going to bed, she said it had been the most wonderful day in her life and I think there were tears in her eyes.

L: I've always been interested in books. I always thought it would be wonderful to be a writer and this was an ambition.
PR: How did you start writing?

The solution to this problem is to develop new approaches to mining that, individually and collectively, serve to reduce dramatically its impacts – while at the same time improving its efficiency and economics. Economic improvement is critical, because if impact reduction does not involve economic benefit it will not be willingly and widely adopted. Fortunately, there are a number of promising strategies for reducing mining's impact and improving its balance sheet. For example:
Identify and Develop New Mining Methods.
It is not hard to envision new methods of mining that would have less impact on the environment and would reduce or eliminate scarring of the land. For example, perhaps techniques as diverse as directional drilling in the petroleum industry and for that matter laparoscopic surgery in medicine could be applied to recovering valuable metals and minerals while dramatically reducing the amount of rock that must be moved. At the very least such an approach is suggestive. Take a systems approach to planning projects. If projects are planned from the outset with a low impact perspective, it should be possible to avoid problems or turn potential problems into assets. For example, open pits can be used as lakes or reservoirs if a project is properly planned. Perhaps post-recovery uses could be found for underground mines if such uses were taken into account at the design phase.
Create an Environmental Certification Agency for New Mining Projects.
A key objection to mining from the environmental industry is that they have little faith in the outcome of mining operations. A certified project would eliminate doubt. Approved projects could proceed faster, thereby rewarding good mining practices. It's time to make mining work in the environment.

Union. All the states were different from each other and developed in different ways. The Northern states built factories and plants, and they also had a bigger population. The Southern states grew crops, which they then sold to Europe. The Southerners had huge cotton fields, where black slaves worked. There were about three and a half million slaves in the Southern states.

As you know, although it was written in the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal, these words were not true for the slaves. They lived in terrible conditions and had to work day and night. Even some Southerners understood that slavery was inhuman, but without it they were afraid their whole way of life would be destroyed.

The Northerners were strongly against slavery; a lot of them helped slaves escape from their owners. They also tried to pass new laws to abolish slavery. This idea became more and more popular, which didn't suit many people in the South. The Southern states felt that their own country was against them, and they started to think of breaking away from the United States.

When the time for the next elections came, it was clear that the most important question would be slavery. There were four candidates, but a Northerner called Abraham Lincoln won the election. In his inaugural address Lincoln warned the Southerners that they shouldn't destroy the union of the states, but they didn't listen. In February 1861 eleven Southern states formed their own union, which was called the Confederacy, but Abraham Lincoln wouldn't let them split up the country. And so the Civil War began.

The North (their army was called the Union Army) was actually more powerful than the South: as you remember, they had more men, and their factories produced weapons and supplied the Northern army with everything it needed. But the Confederacy had one big advantage: they didn't have to invade the North, they just had to protect their own land and homes. At that time a lot of people thought that it would be possible. So at first, the Confederacy had more luck: their men were better trained and fought with more spirit. Just as in the Revolutionary War. Americans from the South were once again fighting for their independence. The Union soldiers were getting tired. After they lost some important battles, the anti-slavery idea wasn't enough to inspire them any more. The Southerners felt that just one more big victory would be enough to win the war.

It was all decided here in Gettysburg in June 1863. The three-day battle was terrible and took the lives of more than fifty thousand men. On the fourth day, the Confederate commander, General Lee, had to admit that he had lost the battle.

After the battle, the American President, Abraham Lincoln, came to Gettysburg to honour the memory of those who had died there. He made a speech there, which later became famous as "The Gettysburg Address". In that speech Lincoln told his countrymen that it was for them to make sure "that the dead shall not have died in vain and that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." Two years later the Confederacy finally surrendered to the Union. As a result of the war, slavery was abolished and the United States of America was one country again.
