The phrase "The USA: one nation, many different people" means that in USA's origins lies so many conquerings and migrations that there is no sense in speaking about different people as long as the country consists of so many components. Nevertheless, all those different components obey the same ideas, therefore, make up one nation, no matter what religion do they profess or what skin color do they have. It's also a hint that USA is a democratic and open country without any prejudices towards people with different origins.

Name the sights of London (8 points). 1) There are four of them on this Tower. Their faces are 221\2 feet in diameter, the small hands are 9 feet long and

the large hands are 14 feet. The bell weighs 131\2 tons and the hammer which strikes it weighs 8 tons. The Tower itself is 318 feet high and you have to go up 374 steps to reach the top. Name the Tower or, at least, the bell. 2) This building is the City's greatest monument and Sir Christopher Wren’s masterpiece. It was built in 1675-1708 and was the fifth church put on the same site. 3) It was built in the 18th century and rebuilt later by the architect John Nash. The first Queen to live there was the young Queen Victoria. Above the State Entrance is the central balcony where the Royal Family appears on occasions of national importance. The Royal Standard flying over the building is the sign that the Queen is in the residence. 4) There is another famous picture gallery in London (besides the National Gallery). It is named after its founder – a sugar manufacturer. The Gallery has rich collections of pictures by 16th century English artists as well as paintings by foreign painters of the 19- 20th centuries (impressionists and post impressionists). It also has a large sculpture collection. 5) This Concert Hall is a circular brick building under a glass-and-metal roof. The Hall was built in 1867-1871. It is a big concert hall, seating 8,000. It is used for concerts, athletic events, for public gathering and other functions. 6) This Shop was built in 1567. It was described by Charles Dickens in his novel of the same title. The shop still sells curios. 7) This area is in the centre of the west End of London. It was named in commemoration of the victorious naval battle of 1805, in which a famous English admiral was fatally wounded. 8) This building long continued to be both a fortress and a palace. It was also a prison. Now it is simply Britain’s most famous and most visited historic building. According to tradition it is guarded by the Yeoman Warders. Task 6. Look at the photos below. What holiday are Englishmen celebrating? What do you know about this holiday (history, date of celebration, how they celebrate it etc. Not more than 15 sentences, 15 points)? Task 7. Prepare a travel itinerary for your future vacation in Britain. It must be on a separate sheet of paper (not more than A4), colourful, interesting, unordinary. Mark on it the cities and places that you found very interesting and really want to visit. Tell us why you chose these cities, what attractions you will see there, what cultural events took place there, etc (30 points). Task 8. Now we are waiting for your own task about the USA. If it is interesting and unusual we will use it in our next contest “Stars and Stripes”. Don’t also forget about your opinion (5 points).

Плизззз! Ответьте на вопросы по тексту. In our last report we told you about the international

A trip to the USA

Teacher- Hi,everybody! I"ve got great news for you. At the end of April your group-- the winners of "English Learners Contest"-- is going to the USA!
Tanya- It's fantastic!
Misha- Wow!
Volodya- I can't believe it! It's too good to be true
Irina- I knew it! I knwe it!
Teasher- Please be quiet. I'm here to tell you all you want to know, but if you make so much noise I won't be able to do it
Volodya- When are we leaving? What places are we going to visit?
Teacher- We are starting on the 23rd of April and we are flying from Sheremetyevo to New York, Kennedy Airport.
Tanya- How long are we going to stay in New York?
Teasher- Only two days, but it's long enough to see the main sights: the Statue of Liberty, Manhattan, the famous skyscrapers, the Metropolitan and the Bronx Zoo
Irina- But New York is in the east and I have always wanted to see Hollywood and Disneyland. Are we going to do to California too?
Teacher- Yes, we are, but only at the end of our trip. Between New York and California we'll go to Philadelphia, the birthplace of America democracy, and Washington, D.C.
Misha- Just Philadelphia and Washington? Aren't we going to Texas? I've always wanred to meet cowboys or even take part in a rodeo.
Tanya- What's a rodeo, Misha?
Micha- Don't you know? It's when cowboys ride wild horses or catch wild horses throwing a lasso. I saw it in a film
Vilidya- I'd like to see the Niagara Falls. Could we please go there?
Teacher- Sorry, boys, not this time. We've got only ten days and four wonderful places to see. I'm sure you'll love them. But if you win another contest(and we're having it in May) who knows ... we may have a chance...
