Miss Martha Meacham kept a little bakery.Miss Martha was forty, and had two thousand dollars in a bank, two false teeth and a kind heart. Many people have married who had less possibilities to do so than Miss Martha. Two or three times a week a man came into her shop to buy bread and very soon she began to show interest in him.He was a man of middle age with spectacles and a short brown beard. His clothes were poor, but he looked clean and had very good manners. He always bought two loaves of stale bread.Fresh bread was five cents a loaft .Stale loaves were five for two.He never bought anything but stale bread. Once Miss Martha saw red and brown stains on his fingers. She was sure then that he was an artist and very poor one.Of course he lived in a little room , where he painted pictures and ate stale bread , and thought of good things in Miss Martha's bakery. Often when Miss Martha sat down to eat her good dinner, she thought about the poor artist and wanted him to share her meal instead of eating his stale bread. Miss Martha, as you have been told, had a very kind heart. In order to find out his profession, she brought from her room one day a painting that she had once bought and put it against the shelves behind a bread counter. It was an Italian painting.A beautiful palace stood near a lake.Miss Martha was sure that an artist would notice it. Two days later the man came into the shop. “Two loaves of stale bread, if you pleas”.”You have a fine picture here, madam”, he said while she was getting the bread. “Yes?” said Miss Martha.”I love art and (she could not say “artists”)and paintings,” she added.”You think it is a good picture, do you?” “The palace,” said the man, “is not in good drawing. The perspective of it is not true.Good morning, madam.” He took his bread and hurried out. Yes, he must be an artist.Miss Martha took the picture back to her room. How kinde his eyes were behind his spectacles! What a broad forehead he had!To be an artist-and to live on stale bread! But a genius often has to struggle before it is recognized. How good would it be for art if a genius was helped by two thousand dollars in the bank, a bakery, and a kind heart too – but these were only dreams. Often now when he came, he talked for some time with Miss Martha. And he continued buying stale bread, never anything else. She thought he was looking thin. She wanted to add something good to eat to his bread, but she had no courage to do it.She knew about artists' pride. Miss Martha began to wear her best blue silk blouse almost every the room behind the shop she cooked some mixture for her face.

Pattaya lies 150 km to the south-east of Bangkok, less than two hours by road, and stretches for some 15 km along the Eastern Seaboard. Thailand’s largest resort divides the coast into traditional fishing villages, other resorts such as Bang Saen and
Rayong, new industrial centres, the towns of Chonburi and Sriracha, and the port and naval base of Satthip. Pattaya beach is a sandy bay with a view of coral islands on the horizon. The region is full of agricultural products including sugar cane, rubber, and fruit trees.
Pattaya in the 1960s was just a little fishing village, until a few Bangkok residents began to spend their weekends here and made a local tourist industry. The only hotel of any size was the Nipa Lodge: other accommodations tended towards holiday bungalows and beach huts. The Vietnam War saw the start of Pattaya’s international repu tation because the resort was used as an official leisure centre. The U- Tapao Airport, which was built for American use at the time, and shops, services, bqrs and hotel accommodations were improved.
Pattaya is now a city in its own right and with its own administration. The government development program for the Eastern Seaboard has transformed the region. Five international schools, four hospitals were built in the area.
Pattaya affords a great variety of accommodations to suit every pocket. Facilities vary from luxury hotels with private beaches to baysidc hotels and bungalows, and economy class hotels and guest houses.
As a beach resort with city status, Pattaya has something for everyone. There is just about everything you can think of for leisure. There is everything for children, for the sports enthusiasts and for those who arc simply looking for warm sunshine.
Pattaya is one of the oldest diving centres in this part of Asia. It has a year-round diving season with good visibility. There is a great variety of marine life and coral. Visitors can windsurf, water ski, sea walk, and swim, sunbathe, sail, or go on trips to coral islands. They can rent water scooters to explore.

George Stephenson
George Stephenson was an English civil engineer and mechanical engineer who built the first public inter-city railway line in the world to use steam locomotives. G.Stephenson was born in Wylam, 9.3 miles (15km) west of Newcastle. His father was a fireman, earning a very low wage, so there was no money for schooling. At the age of 17, Stephenson became an engineman. He realized the value of education and paid to study at night school to learn reading, writing and arithmetic. In1802 he moved to Willington Quay where he worked as a brakeman, made shoes and mended clocks to supplement his income. In 1811 the pumping engine at his work was not working properly and Stephenson offered to fix it. He did so with such success that he was promoted to maintain and repair all the colliery engines. He became an expert in steam-driven machinery.

Stephenson designed his first locomotive in 1814. The locomotive could haul 30 tons of coal up a hill at 4mph (6.4 km/h). The new engines were too heavy to run on wooden rails, and iron rails were in their infancy, with cast iron exhibiting excessive brittleness. Stephenson improved the design of cast-iron rails to reduce breakage and managed to solve the problem caused by the weight of the engine on the primitive rails. The years between 1830-1840 were the busiest in Stephenson life. Many of the first American railroad builders came to Newcastle to learn from Stephenson. But G. Stephenson cannot claim to have invented the locomotive. Richard Trevithick deserves that credit. But Stephenson was the first to suggest the standard gauge, sometimes called “Stephenson gauge” which is now used throughout the world. As a tribute to his life and works, a bronze statue was unveiled at Chesterfield railway station in the town where Stephenson spent the last ten years of his life. G.Stephenson died aged 67, on 12 August 1848 in Chesterfield.
