Эмо — стиль рок-музыки, характеризуемый мелодичностью и экспрессивной лирикой. В середине 80-х был известен как "эмоциональный хардкор" или "эмокор". На базе этого жанра возникла субкультура - эмо.
Эмо появился на сцене хардкор-панка, как реакция на рост насилия и как экспансия взглядов Иэна Маккейя из группы Minor Threat, который переводит взгляд от общества обратно к человеку, личности. Фанат Minor Threat - Ги Пиччиотто формирует группу Rites of Spring в 1984 году, в которой зазвучали мелодичные гитары, разнообразные ритмы и очень личная, страстная лирика, что не так характерно для привычного хардкора. Многие темы группы стали позднее излюбленными у эмо-музыкантов, включая ностальгию, романтичную горечь и поэтическое отчаяние.На выступлениях группы зрители часто плакали. Маккей стал большим поклонником Rites of Spring и сформировал новую группу Embrace, в которой поднимал подобные эмоциональные темы. Лето 1985 года стало известным как «революционное лето», именно тогда появилась новая волна групп.
Однако к 1986 году большинство главных групп движения — включая Rites of Spring, Embrace, Gray Matter и Beefeater — распались.
