Here's what she told us.The citiesSan Francisco is a lovely city in a beautiful bay. It's got lots of great buildings and places. It'ssmaller and much more modern than London, but it's less interesting. London has a lot moretheatres and museums. The Americans are usually more interested in money than culture! Thearchitecture in London is incredible and very stimulating, and the parks and markets arewonderful. London isn't as dangerous as San Francisco, and it's less violent. I feel much saferliving here - nobody carries a gun, not even the police!The cost of livingPeople have a higher standard of living in the States because generally, it's much less expensivethan Finland. For example, petrol is less than hall the price and things like food, clothes, andcameras are much cheaper. It's a shopper's paradise and I always spend a fortune when I go back!It's a bit more expensive to rent a flat in London and my bills are much bigger than they were inSan Francisco. So, although my salary in London is about the same as it was in the States, I haveto work harder to get the same quality of life as I had before.Public transportIn San Francisco you can walk everywhere because it's a small city. There's less traffic than inLondon, and public transport is great. There are cable-cars to go up all the hills and electricbuses which make the city much cleaner. Public transport in London is terrible and reallyexpensive. It takes me an hour to get to work and the journey is usually stressful. London'sdirtier too and much more polluted. The traffic is awful, because there are too many cars and thestreets are narrow. But English drivers aren't as aggressive as American drivers!The foodFood in the States is generally much better. It's fresher, cheaper, and there's much more choice.Restaurants aren't as expensive as in London and the service is much better. In some restaurantsthey put a clock on the table when you arrive, and if they haven't served your meal in fiveminutes, they'll give you the food free! I'm usually disappointed when I eat out in London,although the Indian restaurants are excellent.

Dear Louise, Thank you for the book you sent me. I was very pleased because it arrived on my birthday. I also got a new watch from my parents and a printer for my computer. Now I will be able to print my letters to you, which is good because I write so badly. I had a party in a night club and all of my friends from the University came. We also went to a restaurant where we ate and drank for hours and took lots of photographs. It was wonderful. a lot and makes me feel a kind of disadvantaged. The point is that there is no sense of family in our house. We never fight with each other, and there are no family rows. We try not to get on each other's nerves, but we never do anything together. Everyone is preoccupied with their own business. Mum normally does some cooking, looks through some papers or discusses something with her collegues on the phone. Dad either watches TV or upgrades his car. My brother, who is eight, draws something or plays computer games. As for me, I just feel bored and lonely. To conceal it I pretend to be very busy with my homework, or go out even when I don't feel like doing it at all. Is it the same in other families? If you happen to have some ideas on how to help us. I'd really appreciate it. What could we do together to feel that we are together.
