Alexander Fleming (1881-1955) came from a Scottish family . He was born in August 1881 , the youngest of eight children .It was quite by chance , he came into contact with the person who was supposed to affect his life Sir Almroth Wright , the famous bacteriologist . Fleming interested antimicrobials . After military service he returned to the laboratory work. His landmark discovery in 1928 of the antibacterial powers of forms , of which penicillin is derived , was a great triumph . Telegram from Stockholm told him that he received the Nobel Prize in medicine . " My only merit is that I do not neglect the observation and that I view this topic as a bacteriologist ," Fleming said . " Everywhere I go people thank me for saving their lives. I do not know why they do it . I didn` t do anything. Nature makes penicillin - I just found it . " He died on the 11th March 1955 in London, and was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral . On October 10, 1957 a very simple monument was unveiled at the entrance gate Lohfildskoy farm , high block of red granite with the inscription " Sir Alexander Fleming, discoverer of penicillin was born here in Lohfilde on August 6, 1881 "
