A word about books. Man invented a number of means to cover distance - cars, planes, radio, TV, computers, spaceships, etc. But up till now there has been

only one way to covor time- books. Reading is real fun, isn't it? It may be a fantastic journey into the past or the future, a true love story or a serious novel to challenge your thoughts, a detective or something funny if you like humour.
Until recently you could see a lot of people, old and young, reading in many different places, in a park or on a bus, in a plane or on a beach. It might be a magazine or a newspaper, a volume of poems or a lengthy novel. All kinds of reading stuff. But now it's a rare event. Altenrative sources of information like TV or computers seen more attractive to most people. But books give us something different from them. It's a dialogue with somebody who can tell you a lot about life, people, their relations, and about this fast changing world. Books help you understand yourself better. They develop imagination, love for word and expression and awaken a wish in you to create something. It is next to impossible to imagine life without books.

The way we read. We read in meany different ways, and at different speeds depending on the aim of reading. We sometimes look through the book to see what it is about. We may just want to get the general idea from a newspaper article, a report , or a book in a bookshop. This type of reading is callled skimming reading.
Quick reading is also practised when we want to get a particular piece of information, such as a date or a telephone directories, dictionaries and web pages.
But if we want to get the detailed information we read slowly and carefully. This is called intensive reading, it needs training and special skills to understand the entire content, the beauty of the expression. You get involved in the story. It makes you laugh your head off or cry your heart out. It develops your personality.

перевод текста Dear Maria, Thank you for you letter. You asked me about the Lake District. It certainly is a beautiful place to visit. I'm enclosing a map

and a postcard. Isn't it lovely? You can travel to the Lake District by train or coach from London. I think you should take the train, as you have very little time and it's much quicker and very comfortable. We can easily take you to the station and pick up you up when you return. As for places to stay, I think, you ought to try a Youth Hostel. They're quite cheap and good places for meeting people. You sleep in single beds but you share a room. The Lake District was the home of the famous poet William Wordsworth, who spent most of his life there. It's a wonderful place for walking. There's also a very interesting museum about lakeland life and industry. The whole area gets very crowded in summer with people coming to visit the lakes and the poet's home, so, perhaps, the best thing to do would be to travel on a Friday morning and come back on Monday or Tuesday to avoid the weekend rush. The weather's sometimes warm and sunny but unfortunately, it's often very wet, so bring light waterproof clothing and it might be an idea to buy an umbrella! I hope this helps. We're looking forward to meeting you. Best wishes Sally Murgo

Сократите пож этот рассказ кратко на пересказ на завтра..заранее спасибо) London would not be London without the River Thames. It flows 215

miles across the English countryside and then through the heart of the great city before it reaches the sea. The Thames has played an extremely important part in making England what it is today.

England had very few roads in the past, so the Thames provided a major highway between London and many parts of the country. People could also send supplies of food and other goods to and from London by boat. In times of war, London was protected from sea attacks because they built castles and forts at the mouth of the river. People from the London area got their drinking water from the Thames, and thirsty cows and sheep were a common sight along its banks.

With the industrial Revolution in the 18th centery , the Thames become one of the busiest waterways in the world. Factories made and exported goods of all kinds. So people became rich and many of them built beautiful houses along the banks oh the river. The famous writer Charles Dickens spent part of his childhood there and later wrote about the Thames in his books.

Today the Thames has become a symbol of London, just as much as Big Ben or Buckingham Palace. If you take a stroll along its banks you'll have a day full of pleasant surprises. You can admire bridges built in many different architectural styles. The most famous one is probably Tower Bridge which actually opens up 1,000 times a year to let ships through. Or you might be lucky enough to see London's rowing event, the Oxford and cambridge Boat Race, which takes place on the river every spring. Whether you're a Londoner or a visitor, the Thames will always have something to offer you.
