Climate extremes
How does the weather affect your day-to-day life? Does it influence what clothes you put on? Whether you put an umbrella in your bag or not? In certain parts of the world, people's actual survival depends on the way that they adapt their lives to the extreme weather conditions of their environments.
Extreme heat
Temperatures in the Australian outback -the central desert area of Australia - can often exceed 50 °C for the summer months, New houses are sometimes specifically situated towards the east or west, to avoid the summer sun. Their roofs are insulated to stop heat getting in, and their wood is specially treated to resist the heat. Due to the strength of the sun over this part of the world, Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Since 1981, there has been an official campaign by the Australian government to encourage Australians to protect their skin from the sun. Forest fires are another result of consistently high temperatures. These have become more and more common in the past few years, even happening around the city of Sydney.
Snow and extreme cold
Valdez in Northern Alaska is used to battling against the elements. The town was relocated in 1964 after an earthquake and tidal wave completely destroyed it, and it currently has the record snowfall for the whole continent of North America - 7.7 metres per year. Snow and ice are part of daily life for Alaskans. Many towns, including the state capital Juneau, are accessible only by sea or by air, as roads either don't exist or are blocked for most of the year. Some houses are built without excavating any foundations, and most have special strong roofs to support the snow, and features such as windows that only open inwards so that they aren't ripped off by the Arctic wind.

In March 1992 a man living in Newtown near Boston Massachusetts received a bill for his as yet unused credit card starting that he owed $0.00. He ignored it and threw it away. In April he received another and threw that one away too. The following month the credit card company sent him a very nasty note stating they were going to cancel his card if he didn’t send them $0.00 by return of post. He called them, talked to them, they said it was a computer error and told him they’d take care of it.

However he got a bill for $0.00 stating that he had 10 days to pay his account or the company would have to take steps to recover the debt.

The next month, giving in, he thought he would play the company at their own game and mailed them a check for $0.00. The computer processed his account and returned a statement to the effect that he now owed the credit card company nothing at all.

A week later, the man’s bank called him asking him what he was doing writing a check for $0.00. After a lengthy explanation the bank replied that the $0.00 check had caused their check processing software to fail.

The bank could not process ANY checks from ANY of their customers that day because the check for $0.00 had caused the computer to crash.

Finally the man, who had wanted to buy his wife a computer for her birthday, bought her a typewriter instead.

Are You Right for the Business?

1. To be successful in business one has to possess a set of qualities that would make him a leader. Effective leaders such as Jack Welch, Bill Gates and Walt Disney brought peace and prosperity to their organizations and have become role models and icons in their corporations.
A leader must be a gifted actor, showing poetic, rhetorical and showmanship skills to drive his company. His performance must be authentic, believable and convincing. Great personal appeal helps a leader to develop trust, a key factor to success in interpersonal relations. Leaders know very well that a client and an employee are most likely to give him what he wants if they trust him.
A leader can be called an ambassador for he or she represents their organization externally and internally, collecting and disseminating information. They are relation builders, salespeople, information acquisitions and teachers who make their employees aware of the company's current priorities.
2. A real leader is always a power engine. No matter how strong a leader is he never has all the power in his organization. He can only accomplish organizational goals by mobilizing others to act in accordance with his plans. An effective leader works with others. He persuades colleagues, solves emerging in-company conflicts, and deals with rivals. Sometimes he acts as a despot and a manipulator. His work is similar to that of a conductor; he harmonizes the talents of others as in an orchestra. No matter what he is – a despot or a conductor – a true leader makes his subordinates believe that they have the power to make a difference.
3. A genuine leader is an ardent learner open to new ideas. A continuing process of learning helps him to spot his flaws and take action to correct them.
A leader sometimes becomes a victim. To ensure the continued health and survival of his company, a leader must at times take the blame for problems; perhaps suffer from the loss of power and esteem. In certain situations, a leader, admitting a mistake to his colleagues and partners, gains because of the courage he or she displays.
4. Everyone agrees that leaders need vision, energy, authority and strategic directions. But not many people realize that effective leaders should not be afraid of showing their weakness. -
A leader is a man of intuition. He relies heavily on intuition, on his instincts. He is a good situation sensor and can collect and interpret background information. He can sense what's going on without any words.
No one can just ape another leader. So the challenge facing a perspective leader is to be himself, but with more skill.

2. Ответьте письменно на вопросы после текста.

1) What effective leaders do you know?
2) How can you call a leader?
3) Is a leader a man of intuition?

George Stephenson
George Stephenson was an English civil engineer and mechanical engineer who built the first public inter-city railway line in the world to use steam locomotives. G.Stephenson was born in Wylam, 9.3 miles (15km) west of Newcastle. His father was a fireman, earning a very low wage, so there was no money for schooling. At the age of 17, Stephenson became an engineman. He realized the value of education and paid to study at night school to learn reading, writing and arithmetic. In1802 he moved to Willington Quay where he worked as a brakeman, made shoes and mended clocks to supplement his income. In 1811 the pumping engine at his work was not working properly and Stephenson offered to fix it. He did so with such success that he was promoted to maintain and repair all the colliery engines. He became an expert in steam-driven machinery.

Stephenson designed his first locomotive in 1814. The locomotive could haul 30 tons of coal up a hill at 4mph (6.4 km/h). The new engines were too heavy to run on wooden rails, and iron rails were in their infancy, with cast iron exhibiting excessive brittleness. Stephenson improved the design of cast-iron rails to reduce breakage and managed to solve the problem caused by the weight of the engine on the primitive rails. The years between 1830-1840 were the busiest in Stephenson life. Many of the first American railroad builders came to Newcastle to learn from Stephenson. But G. Stephenson cannot claim to have invented the locomotive. Richard Trevithick deserves that credit. But Stephenson was the first to suggest the standard gauge, sometimes called “Stephenson gauge” which is now used throughout the world. As a tribute to his life and works, a bronze statue was unveiled at Chesterfield railway station in the town where Stephenson spent the last ten years of his life. G.Stephenson died aged 67, on 12 August 1848 in Chesterfield.
