TOPIC: FOREIGN LANGUAGES
ENGLISH– COMMUNICATION BETWEEN SPEAKERS OF DIFFERENT NATIVE LANGUAGES
During the Middle Ages, Latin and Greek were widely used in Europe. French was the language of diplomacy in Europe from the 17th century until its recent replacement by English. Anyway, it is still a working language of international institutions. French was the language of Russian aristocracy in the 18th-19th centuries. French was also the language used among the educated in many cosmopolitan cities across the Middle East and North Africa. Today, several countries throughout the world are members of Francophonie.
English is the current lingua franca of international business, science, technology. It has displaced French as the lingua franca of diplomacy when the role of English-speaking countries, such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and the United States increased after World War II, particularly in the organization of the United Nations.
English remains the lingua franca of former British Empire nations. In this case the use of English helps to avoid the political difficulties if some individual indigenous language becomes more important than languages of other tribes.
The modern trend to use English outside of English-speaking countries has a number of sources. Firstly, it is mostly a result of the spread of English with cultural and technological exports from the United States.
English is also regarded as the global lingua franca because of the dominant positions of the developed Western nations in world financial and business institutions. As a result, English has been carried over globally. English is also dominant in scientific and technological communications, and all of the world's major scientific journals are published in English.
Moreover, just have a look at web forums! Their language, or slang, is based on English. It is accepted and used by the widest range of members of the internet community. Consider some abbreviations in text messages:

The ‘Lost City of Atlantis’ was first described (1) _by_Plato, the famous Greek philosopher, over 2,000 years ago. An unusual gallery.

1) It was a beautiful afternoon in the woods near the village of Montignac. The sky was blue and autumn leaves covered the ground. Four friends strolled happily among the tall trees, telling stories about treasures that people had hidden in the forest.

2) As they were walking, one of the boys fell over. When the others ran to help him, they saw that there was a hole in the ground. Could this be a tunnel with hidden treasures in it? The boys started to dig. trying to make the hole bigger so that they could climb in and have a look. By this time though, it was getting dark and they didn't have a torch, so they decided to come back early the next day.

3) They returned to the woods before school. One by one. the boys lit their torches and crawled into the small dark tunnel. After about ten minutes, the boy who was at the front let out a loud gasp. When he pointed his torch at the wall, everyone was amazed to see the walls covered with colourful pictures of horses, deer and oxen. The friends ran quickly to school and told their teacher all about their fantastic discovery. She called an expert who went immediately to examine the paintings.

4) Later that day, their teacher asked the boys to stay behind after school. They thought that they had done something wrong, but they were relieved when they saw their teacher's smiling face. The expert had confirmed that the boys were the first modern people to lay eyes upon the famous Lascaux paintings, which were at least 17,000 years old. They felt really proud.

To write a story, we first decide on the type of story, the plot and the main characters. Our story can be a comedy, an adventure, a fairy tale etc. We normally use past tenses in stories. In the first paragraph, we write when and where the event happened, who the main characters in the story were and what happened first. In the main body, we describe the events in the order they happened, leading to the climax event (the most important event). We normally use linking words >n as, wisile before etu to show the sequence of events. In the conclusion, we write what happened in the end and how the people in the story felt.

5-7 вопросов к тексту за 18 баллов George doesn't like staying at home when he is on holiday. He prefers going somewhere at the seaside. He enjoys

swimming, windsurfing, and diving. Three months ago he was at the Red Sea and when he came back, tanned and happy, he said that he had never have such a terrific holiday before. As he was very good at swimming and diving and was interested in biology, he managed to join a scientific expedition that studied the sea life of the Red Sea coast at that time. The researchers allowed him to help them in their work and gave him a special suit for diving, so he was able to stay deep in the sea for quite a long time. George was amazed how beautiful the underwater world was. Millions of brightly coloured fish moving busily around him. Crabs, turtles, and sea snakes looked at him curiously and then hurried about their underwater business. Once when George followed a little crab, a huge fish appeared from behind a coral rock. Though he had never seen sharks alive,he recognised it at once. Fortunately, the shark took no interest in him and disappeared into the depth as if it had much more important things to do. While George was working for the expedition, exploring the sea plants and animals in their natural conditions, he made a firm decision to go on studying biology and natural sciences as the research work became very attractive to him.
