The press, television and radio (mass media) play an important part in the life of the society. They influence the way people look at the world and make them change their views. Some people say, ”News is not what happens – it is what you see or read in mass media.” In other words, mass media shapes public opinion. (Sometimes it is good, but sometimes terribly bad. It depends.)

Millions of people watch TV and read newspapers and magazines in their spare time. Television dominates one`s life if the family watches it most of the time. Television informs, educates, and entertains people. It is also a habit-forming drug impossible to resist.

Various TV games, such as quiz shows, and music programmes attract a large audience. During TV quiz programmes the questions are answered by the viewers.

Then there are daily TV serials known as soap operas. Some people find them boring, others consider them to be good entertainment and relaxation.

There is also a lot of advertising on TV. A lot of commercial firms buy the time to advertise their goods.

Advertising often annoys the general public. A film, a good basketball or football match may be interrupted several times with advertisements for the soap powder or new perfume.

To convince the viewers that a certain product is the best and to persuade him to buy it takes not only a lot of imagination but also a lot of time. The same advertisements are repeated dozens of time every day, which bores the viewers.

Some people say there is too much violence on television, which has a bad influence on viewers, especially young people. Television often shows scenes of violence.

A GLOBAL TEENAGER
Music, television and movies do not respect national 1boundaries . Today one can hear rock-and-roll in the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai [0SBN9hai]. It is common to find people wearing Levi jeans or T-shirts in every place of the world. Japanese television shows MTV from London. US films are popular worldwide. American painters are influenced by European artists. Mexican-style fast-food restaurants or Japanese sushi bars can be found in different corners of the planet. What about a teenager? Everyone can see that English plays an important part in a teenager's world. It is the dominant language in youth style. English is a way in which teenagers across the world communicate with each other and share a common culture. The example of this is the existence of graffiti written in English in many different countries. Teens are more ready to learn English on the streets of cyberspace than in the classroom. Young people learn English from their pen pals and friends on the Internet and it is not always the same as the English they learn in the classroom. In fact, teenagers in Ukraine may feel he/shehas more in common with Internet friend in Norway than with other young people in their own country. Teens these days can chat online with their friends thousands of kilometres away. Young people around the globe are beginning to hang around together on the Internet as they used to on the street. The effect of the Internet on a teenage boy enables him to find thousands of people around the world whose preferences in music or reading are similar to his own. The strongest force in international youth culture today is pop music. Music has universal appeal. The popularity of the satellite TV channel MTV is the example of this: their pop videos play in every place of the planet, from Dallas to Stockholm, from Rome to Kyiv, and since most of the songs are in English, kids from all over the world learn to sing in English, too. A Ukrainian teenager knows that he may live in a small town of Horlivka but he is right in the centre of the main trend, he feels he is exactly in tune with all his/her unseen friends from the Internet. Though, young people are individuals and must be encouraged to celebrate together their individual and cultural differences. They express themselves, for example, in Weblish, the new shorthand English used in text messaging and in the Internet chat rooms. Weblish is a kind of 'slang' — idiomatic English which often breaks the rules of correct English. For example, capital letters are not used. 1 Here is a glossary of some of the key expressions and symbols used in chat rooms.

Libraries

Libraries play an important part in the cultural development of a country. People have a desire to learn, they seek knowledge. Books satisfy this desire.

Books should not be read only for pleasure. Reading books helps us in our education. We can find all kinds of books in the libraries: novels, biographies, fiction, short stories, books on travelling, technical books, magazines, books for children and so on. In some libraries we can find books in many foreign languages.

When a reader comes to a library for the first time he fills in his library card and the librarian helps him to choose something to read. The reader is allowed to borrow books for a certain number of days. The catalogues help the reader to find the books he needs. We should be careful with the books and not damage them in any way. We should not make notes in library books or dog's-ear the pages. Reading rooms are open to all who wish to work there. Besides books we can get periodicals, newspaper files and magazines to read there. Readers come to reading rooms to study and prepare material for their reports or for their scientific work.

London would not be London without the River Thames. It flows 215 miles across the English countryside and then through the heart of the great city before

it reaches the sea. The Thames has played an extremely important part in making England what it is today.

England had very few roads in the past, so the Thames provided a major highway between London and many parts of the country. People could also send supplies of food and other goods to and from London by boat. In times of war, London was protected from sea attacks because they built castles and forts at the mouth of the river. People from the London area got their drinking water from the Thames, and thirsty cows and sheep were a common sight along its banks.

With the industrial Revolution in the 18th centery, the Thames become one of the busiest waterways in the world. Factories made and exported goods of all kinds. So people became rich and many of them built beautiful houses along the banks oh the river. The famous writer Charles Dickens spent part of his childhood there and later wrote about the Thames in his books.
Today the Thames has become a symbol of London, just as much as Big Ben or Buckingham Palace. If you take a stroll along its banks you'll have a day full of pleasant surprises. You can admire bridges built in many different architectural styles. The most famous one is probably Tower Bridge which actually opens up 1,000 times a year to let ships through. Or you might be lucky enough to see London's rowing event, the Oxford and cambridge Boat Race, which takes place on the river every spring. Whether you're a Londoner or a visitor, the Thames will always have something to offer you. в тексте нужно найти такие предложение, которые можно переделать в страдательный залог, 8 класс)
