Name the sights of London (8 points). 1) There are four of them on this Tower. Their faces are 221\2 feet in diameter, the small hands are 9 feet long and

the large hands are 14 feet. The bell weighs 131\2 tons and the hammer which strikes it weighs 8 tons. The Tower itself is 318 feet high and you have to go up 374 steps to reach the top. Name the Tower or, at least, the bell. 2) This building is the City's greatest monument and Sir Christopher Wren’s masterpiece. It was built in 1675-1708 and was the fifth church put on the same site. 3) It was built in the 18th century and rebuilt later by the architect John Nash. The first Queen to live there was the young Queen Victoria. Above the State Entrance is the central balcony where the Royal Family appears on occasions of national importance. The Royal Standard flying over the building is the sign that the Queen is in the residence. 4) There is another famous picture gallery in London (besides the National Gallery). It is named after its founder – a sugar manufacturer. The Gallery has rich collections of pictures by 16th century English artists as well as paintings by foreign painters of the 19- 20th centuries (impressionists and post impressionists). It also has a large sculpture collection. 5) This Concert Hall is a circular brick building under a glass-and-metal roof. The Hall was built in 1867-1871. It is a big concert hall, seating 8,000. It is used for concerts, athletic events, for public gathering and other functions. 6) This Shop was built in 1567. It was described by Charles Dickens in his novel of the same title. The shop still sells curios. 7) This area is in the centre of the west End of London. It was named in commemoration of the victorious naval battle of 1805, in which a famous English admiral was fatally wounded. 8) This building long continued to be both a fortress and a palace. It was also a prison. Now it is simply Britain’s most famous and most visited historic building. According to tradition it is guarded by the Yeoman Warders. Task 6. Look at the photos below. What holiday are Englishmen celebrating? What do you know about this holiday (history, date of celebration, how they celebrate it etc. Not more than 15 sentences, 15 points)? Task 7. Prepare a travel itinerary for your future vacation in Britain. It must be on a separate sheet of paper (not more than A4), colourful, interesting, unordinary. Mark on it the cities and places that you found very interesting and really want to visit. Tell us why you chose these cities, what attractions you will see there, what cultural events took place there, etc (30 points). Task 8. Now we are waiting for your own task about the USA. If it is interesting and unusual we will use it in our next contest “Stars and Stripes”. Don’t also forget about your opinion (5 points).

Перевод : And at noon the Student opened his window and looked out/ " How wonderful" he cried. "Here is a red rose! I have never seen any rose like it

in all my life. It is so beautiful that I am sure it has a long Latin name," and so he picked it with joy in his heart. Then he put on his hat, and ran to the Proffessor house with the rose in his hand. The Proffessor daughter was lying at her feet. " You said that you would dance with me if I brought you a red rose,"cried the dent. "Here is the reddest rose in all the world. You will wear it to-night near your heart and when we dance together it will tell you how much I love you." But the girl frowned.

The Name by Henry Cecil Henry Cecil (pseudonym, real name Henry Cecil Leon) is an English detective story writer. He was born in Middlesex before the

First World War; the author of many successful books: ‘Alibi for a Judge’, ‘Friends at Court’, ‘Sober as a Judge’ and others. ‘Settled out of Court’, in a dramatic version made by William Saroyan and the author, ran for some time at the Strand Theatre. ‘George Elephant!’ called the Clerk in Court Number One; and a small man with glasses was brought. ‘Are you George Elephant?’ asked the Clerk. ‘I am’. ‘You are charged with murder; that you at Golders Green on the 19th day of January 1948, murdered Jane Elephant. How say you, George Elephant, are you guilty or not guilty?’ ‘Not guilty.’ ‘Very well,’ said the Judge. ‘You may sit down.’ Except for a few remarks on the curious name of the prisoner, few people were interested in the case. The facts as stated were very simple. On the 20th January the prisoner had walked into a police station. ‘I have cut my wife`s throat,’ he said. ‘She`s quite dead.’ It seemed true enough. Her throat seemed to have been cut with a razor which was near her body. George was born of ordinary middle-class parents at the end of the nineteenth century. There was no sign of madness in the family. On leaving school George had gone into his father`s business, and after that he had married and settled down to an ordinary life. Jane was not a particularly attractive wife. Although she was pretty, she grew fat as she grew older. She took a good deal of pleasure in laughing at George, and one of the subjects of which she never seemed to get tired was his last name. George was a little ashamed of his name, but he had never had the courage to change it. Usually, however, the owners of unfortunate names just bear them. George had certainly suffered a great deal. When he first went to school and was asked his name in front of the other boys, he replied, ‘George Elephant.’ ‘Olliphant?’ said the master. ‘No, sir, Elephant.’ ‘What, Elephant? Like the animals?’ ‘Yes, sir, like the animals.’ After that at school he was called by the names of all known, and some unknown, animals. George was modest, and boys at school are merciless. He was not happy there and was thankful when he left. But his troubles did not end when he left school. When he married Jane he had hoped she would make his difficulties lighter. But Jane did not mind being called Elephant; in fact she told everyone her new name. Even when she was being loving she used to call him ‘my elephant boy’, and so he was not allowed to forget. When Sir Gordon Macintosh had discovered these facts, he had no doubt at all of the proper defence to raise in the court. He immediately had George examined by famous doctors. The doctors said that the accused was not mad, but that his mind was very much affected by jokes about his name. The doctors for the defence said that the prisoner might have been made so angry by his wife`s jokes that he could not control himself. George was not found guilty of murder, but he was sent to prison with hard labour for seven years. That, however, was not the end of the matter, because the case by this time caused great public interest. In the end, so much sympathy was shown for George and so much pressure was put on the Government, that George`s time in prison was reduced from seven years to three. Two years later, just before he was let out, a priest arrived at the prison where George was. He had a talk with George. ‘Before you leave,’ said the visitor, ‘would you like to say anything to me3 in secret. Tell me, for example, what6 was it that actually led you to kill your wife?’ ‘Well, as a matter of fact,’ said George, ‘I was fond of another woman.’ пожалуйста,очень нужно перевести,я не успеваю(((

Will married Anne Hathaway in November, and she came to live in Henley Street.John Shakespeare was pleased that his oldest son was married, but I don't

think Will's mother wanted him to marry so young.Families cost a lot of money, and John Shakespeare was having a lot of money troubles in those days.Times were hard in Henley Street.

Susanna was born the next May.All babies look the same to me,but Will was very pleased with her.

‘Look,Toby, she's got my eyes,’he said happily.‘She's going to be as beautiful as the Queen of Egypt, and as clever as King Solomon.’

‘Oh yes?’I said.‘All parents talk like that about their children.I don't believe a word of it.’

I didn't see much of Will's wife.I knew she didn't like me.To her,I was one of Will's wild friends, who got him into trouble. She came from a very serious,Puritan family.Lots of church-going,and no singing or dancing.

Soon there was another baby on the way,and one evening in February 1585 I hurried round to Henley Street to hear the news. Will's sister,Joan, opened the door, and then Will came running down the stairs.

‘It's two of them!’he said.‘Twins!A girl and a boy.Isn't that wonderful!’

Will had some good friends,Hamnet and Judith Sadler, and he called the twins after them.John Shakespeare was very pleased to have his first grandson, and everyone was happy. For a while.

Will and I still went around together when we could. He was still reading, and writing, and soon I could see a change in him.He was twenty-three now,and he was not happy with his life.

‘Stratford's too small,Toby,’he said.‘Too slow.Too quiet.Too boring.I've got to get away.’

‘Yes,but how?’I asked.‘You've got a family—three young children,remember.’

He didn't answer.

In the summer months companies of players often came to small towns, and in 1587 five different companies came. Will and I always went to see the plays. Will loved to talk to the actors and to listen to all their stories of London

The Queen's Men came to Stratford in June, and we went to see the play.I don't remember what it was.I know that I laughed a lot,and that Will said it was a stupid play, with not a word of poetry in it.

‘Why don't you write a play yourself?’I told him.

‘Write a play?’He laughed.‘Anne would never speak to me again.’

I didn't say anything, and Will looked at me and laughed again.

It happened a few months later.I walked into the Shakespeares' kitchen one evening, and there was Anne, with a red, angry face, shouting at the top of her voice.

‘How can you do this to me?And what about the children—’Then she saw me and stopped.

Will was sitting at the table, and looked pleased to see me.‘I've told Anne,’he said quietly,‘that I'm going to live in London.I want to be an actor, and to write plays,if I can.’

‘Plays!’screamed Anne.‘Acting!Actors are dirty, wicked people! They're all thieves and criminals! They drink all day and they never go to church—’

‘Don't be stupid,Anne. You know that's not true.Listen.I'll come home when I can,but I must go to London.I can't do anything in Stratford.’He looked at me across the room.‘Are you coming with me,Toby?’

‘How soon can we start?’I said.ПОМОГИТЕ ПОЖАЛУСТА МНЕ ОЧЕНЬ НУЖЕН ПЕРЕВОД ЕТОГО ТЕКСТА
