lot.

It set the meat shivering and shaking. It set the potatoes dancing up and down. It set the gravy spinning round like a whirlpool, and it set the peas hopping and jumping over the table as if they were alive!

Some of the children looked shocked because they thought Derek was naughty, but some of them laughed because they thought it was funny.

The lady who looked after the children at dinner time was called Mrs North. She did not think it was funny at all.

‘What are you doing?’ she asked angrily.

‘I can’t help it,’ said Derek. ‘It’s the plate’s fault. It’s a jumping plate.’

‘A jumping plate! How can it be?’ said Mrs North. She cleared up the mess and took the plate of food back to the kitchen. She emptied the food into a bin and turned the plate upside down.

‘Perhaps it’s not flat,’ she thought. But it looked flat.

‘Nothing wrong with it,’ she thought, but she did notice a tiny dab of blue paint underneath. Perhaps it was a tiny dab of blue paint or perhaps it was a tiny dab of magic. Who could tell?

The next day the jumping plate was put on the table in front of a little girl called Ann who stayed to school dinners. Ann did not even know it was new and of course, she did not know it was a jumping plate.

On the jumping plate was Ann’s dinner—fish, chips, tomato sauce and peas. The dinner looked the same as all the other dinners. The plate looked the same as all the other plates.

Ann began to eat, and the plate began to jump. At first it jumped only a little—just enough to set the dinner trembling. Then it jumped a little more—enough to set the fish shivering and shaking. Then it jumped a lot.

It set the fish shivering and shaking. It set the chips dancing up and down. It set the tomato sauce spinning round like a whirlpool, and it set the peas hopping and jumping over the table as if they were alive!

Some of the children looked shocked because they thought Ann was naughty, but some of them laughed because they thought it was funny. Mrs North did not think it was funny at all, but she felt very puzzled.

‘What are you doing?’ she asked in a surprised voice.

‘I can’t help it,’ said Ann unhappily. ‘It’s the plate’s fault. It’s a jumping plate.’

‘A jumping plate!’ said Mrs North. ‘How can it be?’

‘It must be the one I had yesterday,’ said Derek.

The big bang model is a broadly accepted scientific theory for the origin and evolution of uor universe.According to this theory the universe was created about 10 billion years ago from a cosmic explosion that hurled matter in all directions.Astronomers believe that once all the matter and energy in the universe were concentrated in a single place. This place was extremely hot and dense. Then, sometime between 10 billion and 20billion years ago,an enormous and powerful explosion -The big bang -shot the concentrated matter and nergy in all directions. After the initial big bang, the force of gravity began to affect the matter racing outward in every direction,Gravity caused some of the matter to come together to form galaxies and Stars. The clumps of matter around our own star, the sun, became planets.some planets were large enough and had enough gravity to attract matter that became moons or satellites. In 1927,the Belgian priest george Lemantre was the first to assume that the universe began with the explosion began with the explosion of a primeavl atom.Years later, edwin Hublble found experimental evidence that helped to justify Lemantres theory. He made observations and stated thath distant galaxies are going away from us in every direction at a speed proportional to heir distance from the centre of te universe.Since the big bang the universe has been continuously expanding and thus the distance between clusters of galaxies has become much bigger than it was before .This phenomenon is known as the red shift. The stars galaxies were much closer to each other in the past than they are at present and they are corrently moving rapidly away from each other. At the same time the matter inside the galaxies continues to race away from the area where the big bang had occurred. Thus it has been stated that at present all the galaxies are speeding away from the centre of the universe. The big bang theory also predicts the existence of cosmic background radiation(the glow left after the explosion itself). In 1964 this radiation was discovered by arno penzias and robert wilson who later won the nobel prize for this discovery .Although the big bang theory has been widely accepted it will probably never be proved and thus it leaves a number of tough unanswered questions.

Sarah had a son of ten, who was called Jack. He did not like studying, but loved watching television. Sarah used to drive at school at half past four in the afternoon, bring Jack back home and give him some tea, but as soon as he got home, he always rushed to the television set and turned it on. “Haven’t you got any homework, Jack?” his mother always asked him as she began to make tea.
“Eh? Oh, yes, I have got a little,” he used to answer. “I’ll do it later when there’s nothing interesting on the television.”
At first Sarah had allowed Jack to watch television instead of starting his homework first, but soon she discovered that he never had a little homework – it was always a great deal- and that there was never a time when there was nothing interesting on television, so that after putting off doing his homework for a couple of hours, Jack was too tired to do his homework properly, if at all.
Sarah then decided to make him do it first. This was always a battle, and often when Jack obeyed his mother, he did his work quickly and carelessly as he wanted to finish it quickly and get back to his beloved television.
The result was the same as when he left his homework until last; bad work, which he was punished for the next day at school by getting low marks, either because his homework was full of mistakes, or because he did not know the work he was supposed to have prepared the night before.
One evening Jack’s science homework was about famous inventors like Thomas Edison, who made important discoveries and inventions in the field of electricity. When he had homework that consisted of learning facts, his mother began to test him when he finished, to try to make sure that he had really done the work properly and not left anything out, and this was what she did this time. She did not let him stop until she was sure that he knew what was in his book.
But this time, it was less of a battle than usual to make Jack sit down and go over what he had learnt carefully, because it had strong connection with television.
In class the next day, the teacher said to Jack,” What are some of the things that Thomas Edison did for science?”
“Well,” Jack answered happily, “first of all, if it were not for Edison, we’d all be watching television by candlelight.”
