Andrei Sakharov was born in 21 May, 1921 in Moscow. After graduating from Moscow State University in 1942 he started his work in physics. By the age of 32 he was one of the world's most famous scientists who lived in Russia.

In 1953 A. Sakharov became the youngest academician in Russia. Unlike many scientists A. Sakharov realised advantages and disadvantages of technical progress in modern world. And at the end of the 50s he decided to devote himself to fighting against future atomic wars. He was also one of those who founded the Moscow Committee on Human Rights.

He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975.

In December 1987 Sakharov participated in the International Conference against atomic wars. The Conference took place in Moscow.

A. Sakharov started his official career as a member of Russian Parliament in 1987.

A. Sakharov is the author of several books on progress and freedom all over the world.

He died on the 14 of December, 1989.

Now, many years after A. Sakharov's death people still remember him and share his ideas.

The teenager who changed world history
A. Franz Ferdinand was the direct cause of the First World War, which started the same year, and which resulted in the deaths of nine million soldiers. The war ended in 1918 with the Treaty of Versailles, which was very unfavourable to Germany. This, in turn, resulted in Germany going to war again in 1939, a war in which approximately 60,000,000 people around the world lost their lives.
B. For example, do you know who Gavrilo Princip was? Probably not. He was a Serb, born in Bosnia in 1894 and was one of nine children, six of whom died when they were very young. Gavrilo's health was also very bad and he suffered from tuberculosis. He studied in Belgrade where he spent most of his time with nationalists who wanted a union between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia. He died when he was just 24 years old.
C. The Second World War ended with the Treaty of Yalta in 1945 which led to the division of Eastern Europe, which eventually led to the conflict in Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Possibly no other person has had so much impact on world history over the last century than the sickly teenager, Gavrilo Princip.
D. History tells us about famous leaders, Kings and Queens, but what about the great changes which have been caused by one small act carried out by a relatively unknown person?
E. So why is he so important? Well, Gavrilo Princip is the boy who, at the age of 19, assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914. Franz Ferdinand was going to be the next Austro-Hungarian emperor and the nationalists wanted their country to be independent from the empire. After shooting and killing the Archduke in his car, Gavrilo was captured by the police and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. But he died in prison of tuberculosis in 1918.

Напишите как читаются слова русскими буквами. Forty years ago Gordon Alford was on holiday when he decided to ask some famous footballers for

their autographs. Since that time he has collected 7,000 autographs of famous people. He has thirteen specially made albums for them. Most of his autographs are from famous actors, musicians and athletes. Every weekend Gordon leaves his house before seven in the morning to go and stand outside radio and television sta-tions. He hopes to catch anyone famous coming in or going out. In the evening he waits outside London theatres.
Autographs can be very expensive. For example, an autograph from any of The Beatles (a very famous rock'n'roll group in the 1960s) may cost as much as £1,500. The highest price anyone has paid for an autograph is $1,320,000, which was for President Abraham Lincoln's signature. And the autograph that every collector would love to have is the signature of William Shakespeare, the famous English dramatist who died in 1616. A collector could pay more than two million pounds to get his signature.

5-7 вопросов к тексту за 18 баллов George doesn't like staying at home when he is on holiday. He prefers going somewhere at the seaside. He enjoys

swimming, windsurfing, and diving. Three months ago he was at the Red Sea and when he came back, tanned and happy, he said that he had never have such a terrific holiday before. As he was very good at swimming and diving and was interested in biology, he managed to join a scientific expedition that studied the sea life of the Red Sea coast at that time. The researchers allowed him to help them in their work and gave him a special suit for diving, so he was able to stay deep in the sea for quite a long time. George was amazed how beautiful the underwater world was. Millions of brightly coloured fish moving busily around him. Crabs, turtles, and sea snakes looked at him curiously and then hurried about their underwater business. Once when George followed a little crab, a huge fish appeared from behind a coral rock. Though he had never seen sharks alive,he recognised it at once. Fortunately, the shark took no interest in him and disappeared into the depth as if it had much more important things to do. While George was working for the expedition, exploring the sea plants and animals in their natural conditions, he made a firm decision to go on studying biology and natural sciences as the research work became very attractive to him.
