У британцев существует восемь официальных праздников. Они называются "банковскими праздниками" вероятно потому, что банки, также как большинство магазинов и офисов, закрыты. Эти праздники: Новый год, страстная пятница, Пасхальный понедельник, праздник Первого мая, последний понедельник мая, Рождество и день подарков. Новый год стал праздником только тогда, когда Великобритания вступила в Европейский Экономический Союз в 1973 году.
Дни святых покровителей не отмечаются как праздники. Эти дни: день Святого Давида в Уэльсе 1 Марта, день Святого Георга в Англии 23 апреля и день Святого Андрея в Шотландии 30 ноября. Только в Ирландии, и Северной, и Южной, существует праздник -
день Святого Патрика 17 марта. Однако, существует довольно много широко празднуемых фестивалей, которые не являются праздниками.
