Hobbies

Different people like doing different things; different people have different hobbies. My brother is fond of collecting stamps. He has got a very good collection and he is proud of it. His stamps can tell you about different people and countries. My brother often says that his hobby is popular with people of all ages.
Collecting stamps is easy and interesting. It is real fun. You begin to learn many facts about history and famous people when you start to collect stamps. At first people collect every kind of stamps. But soon they begin to make special collections. Sometimes they specialize in stamps of one subject only, for example, birds, animals, flowers or sports. This kind of collecting is called thematic. My brother's collection is thematic. His theme is fish.
My best friend, Alice, is a collector too. She is fond of collecting badges. Her collection is thematic. Her theme is sports. She keeps her badges on the wall. When you come into her room you can see them all there.
My grandfather collected coins when he was a boy. Som people collect dolls. My aunt does. When she travels, she always brings home dolls from different countries. Some people collect pictures, cups, toy soldiers, books, pencils and many other things. But collecting things is not the only hobby people have. Some people are fond of travelling or gardening. When they go abroad the British often surprise people of other nationalities by this tendency to talk about the weather, a topic of conversation that other people do not find so interesting. The best time of the year in Britain is spring (of course, it rains in spring too). The two worst months in Britain are January and February. They are cold, damp and unpleasant. The best place in the world then is at home by the big fire. Summer months are rather cold and there can be a lot of rainy days. So most people who look forward to summer holidays, plan to go abroad for the summer — to France, Spain or some other place on the Continent. The most unpleasant aspect of British weather is fog and smog. This is extremely bad in big cities and especially in London. The fog spreads everywhere, it is in the streets and it creeps into the houses. Cars move along slowly, but still street accidents are frequent in the fog. People cannot see each other. When we think about medieval Europe, one of the first things that we remember is the Inquisition. The Inquisition was started in 1184 by the Pope in Rome to fight against heretics, people who didn't agree with the Church. The Inquisition had the power of life and death over any Catholic and people were afraid of it, but at the end of the fifteenth century things started to change. It was the century of great discoveries.
In 1492 Columbus discovered America. In 1497 Vasco da Gama opened up a sea route to India. In 1500 Brazil was discovered, and in 1522 Magellan's expedition went round the world for the first time.
These discoveries put the Church in a difficult position. For centuries it had been telling people: 'The world is flat." But the explorers showed that it wasn't true. It became clear to everybody that the Earth was round.
Worse than that, at the beginning of the 16th century a young Polish astronomer, Copernicus, came up with a new idea. "The Earth is not the centre of the universe. It revolves around the sun, together with some other planets."
The Catholic Church had to find a way to hide this knowledge from ordinary people. In 1559 it published the Index Liborum Prohibitorum ['indeks 'libnrom 'prnhibitDrum], a list of books that were banned for Catholics. People who read these books were punished by the Inquisition. Any books from the list were burned.
Nowadays the Index Liborum Prohibitorum is open to the public. Think of any famous scientist, writer or philosopher — you'll find his name and works on the list.
