The Plot: 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'by Jules Verne is an adventure story about a professor, Otto Lidenbrock, and his nephew Axel. After they find a mysterious message from explorer Arne Saknussemm in an old book, they go on a dangerous journey to look for the centre of the earth. During their adventure, their raft is broken against rocks and they discover an amazing place...

While Hans repairs the raft, Axel and the Professor look around.

Professor: Let's explore this area over here! Professor: What's that noise? Axel: Quick! Hide!

The men hide behind some bushes.

Axel: Look! A man. And huge elephants. Professor: But, they used to live thousands of years ago. When we get home, people will be amazed by what we saw. Axel: But, will they believe us? Professor: We must get back to Hans and the raft!

Axel: Wait! What's this? 1

Professor: It's a very old knife. It must be Arne Saknussemm's!

The Professor finds initials on a cave wall.

Professor: Saknussemm was here! The compass must be broken. Professor: We found it! This must be the last part of Arne Saknussemm's journey!

Professor: Quick - let's find Hans and come back!

Read the text «BOOKWORM’S LOVE OF READING» and decide whether the following sentences are true.He is a

bookworm and has no other hobbies.

Chun-To reads one or two books a week.

His favourite books are famous classics. To read more he exchanged books with his classmates. He borrowed books from school. BOOKWORM'S LOVE OF READING
WINS HIM TOP AWARD Thirteen-year-old Chun-To started with one or two books а week but in the past nine months he has read 137 books — enough to win the Education Department's Extensive English Reading Scheme award. Не became the top student from 19 schools participating in the Scheme run by the Institute of Language in Education. The Wong Shiu Chi Secondary School pupil suggested that he probably was а kind of bookworm and that he had few other hobbies, though he did once represent his primary school in а table tennis contest. But most evenings he spent reading to try to improve his English. “Every evening after my homework I set aside one to two hours reading the story books. And when I had finished the ones I borrowed from school I exchanged them with my schoolmates, sо I can read more,” he said. Chun-To said his favourite books were science fiction, detective and horror stories but most of the titles he read for the competition were famous classics. “At first I had tо read twice some of the books I found difficult,” he admitted. The school will not allow students to borrow books over the summer holidays but Chun-To said he hoped tо continue his reading next term. But as for his future career, he was still undecided. “I want to work in an office rather than labouring and I want to be able to use my mind, but it's too early for me to decide what I might do,” he said.

Проверьте отрывок из эссе, пожалуйста. I've recently read a book, which has made a very deep impression on me. It is named "The Pillars of the Ea

rth". The author of the book is Ken Follett. I've never been a fan of Follett, and picked this book up with some misgivings - this book was adapted for TV series. But Follett does an amazing job of both presenting a realistic picture of the period and connecting the characters so closely, that the 2 threads are interwoven, instead of one outshining the other. What makes The Pillars of the Earth extraordinary is the time—the twelfth century; the place—feudal England; and the subject—the building of a glorious cathedral. The building of the cathedral serves as a cornerstone to explore the lives of an intriguing cast of characters and how life was lived at that point in history. What made the book for me was the characters. Even the protagonists had flaws that were believable. They persevered despite their flaws and in some cases even tried to overcome them. But each character revealed something of twelfth century life. There was the monk, the young woman, the builder, the earl, and minor roles for figures from history. They all added something to the story, and they each felt like a real person. I would advise you to read this book.
