During the Middle Ages, Latin and Greek were widely used in Europe. French was the language of diplomacy in Europe from the 17th century until its recent replacement by English. English is the current lingua franca of international business, science, technology. English remains the lingua franca of former British Empire nations. In this case the use of English helps to avoid the political difficulties if some individual indigenous language becomes more important than languages of other tribes.
