Higher Education in the USA.

Higher education in this country is not a nation-wide system. It’s not tightly organised or monolytic, its institutions differ considerably in size and sponsorship. They range from two-year community colleges to major research universities of a hundred thousand students.
The next thing to know is, that there are 2 types of Universities and colleges in the United States, I mean private and state (not federal). The difference between them is the following: private colleges are very expensive, they are generally smaller and the tuition fees are much higher. In the state colleges and Universities the fees are much lower, especially for state residents. They are subsidized by state governments. The University of California and the State University of New York are two examples of such public schools. Yet it is more prestigious to get a degree at a private University where the quality of education is almost always better.
As far as entrance standards are concerned they differ considerably from University to University. All the applicants must have a satisfactory high school transcript (аттестат) which helps University officials determine the applicant’s capacity to do satisfactory work at a University. While still in high school the student also takes the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) for short if he wants to apply to a University. The applicant must also write an essay of some kind, often autobiographical. An interview is usually required when one applies to a private University.

Прочтите 3-й абзац текста и вопрос к нему. Из приведенных вариантов ответа укажите номер предложения, содержащего правильный ответ на поставленный вопрос:

Education in the United States

There is no
federal educational standard in the USA. Schooling and educational programmes
are the responsibility of each state; this is why one can find great
differences in education from state to state. No uniform demands exist on
education in schools or universities through-out the nation. In most states
attending school is obligatory for children between six and seventeen.
Secondary education institutions include elementary schools and high schools.
Higher education in the USA is not nation-wide. Colleges differ a lot from each
other in scale and level of education as well as in the "quality" of
diplomas given. There are private and state universities. Private education is
considered more prestigious. The most famous private university is Harvard.
Higher education is rather expensive in the USA.A typical American university has two levels of education: two years of undergraduate classes and two more years of graduate
classes. The undergraduate years are called the freshman and the sophomore
year. During the first and the second year the students take subjects of general
education: Science, Humanities, Arts. The specialization begins at the third
and the fourth years, named the junior and the senior year respectively. After the
fourth year at college, students get a Bachelor's degree. Graduates may
specialize further and do research. They get a Master's Degree.

There are two stages of school education in Russia: primary education and secondary education.

At the age of 6 or 7 Russian children go to school.
During the first three or four years they get a primary education: they learn to read, write, count, and draw. They also have lessons of music, physical training and handicrafts.
Unlike England or the U. S. A., in Russia primary schools are not, as a rule, separated from secondary schools: we have large schools which combine a primary education department and a secondary education department under one roof. In fact, a typical Russian school is actually a secondary school with a primary education department. Only in small country places there may be separate primary schools, on finishing which, the pupils pass on to the nearest larger secondary school.
The course of secondary education is, in its turn, subdivided into two stages: the first stage, which might be called intermediate, and the second one.
The intermediate stage is compulsory and embraces forms from the 5th up to the 9th. During the intermediate stage the pupils get a basic knowledge in the Russian language and literature, a foreign language, mathematics, physics, chemistry, history, geography, biology. They also have lessons of music, art and handicrafts. A computer course is also included in the curriculum.
On completing the intermediate course of studies, at the age of 14, the pupils may either go to vocational or technical schools, which give a professional training, or stay on at the secondary school for another two years. The curriculum of the last two years offers a wide range of subjects, so that teenagers can choose a course of studies, according to their individual inclinations and abilities.
