A rich American went to Paris and bought a very strange picture painted by a fashionable modern artist. The American thought the picture was very fine because he had paid a lot of money for it. But when he came to his hotel and wanted to hang the picture up on the wall, he could not tell which was the top and which the bottom of the picture. The American turned the picture this way and that, but still could not decide which was the top and which was the bottom. So he thought of a plan. He hung the painting in the dining-room and invited the artist to dinner. When the artist came, the American said nothing to him about the picture. When the artist began to eat his soup, he looked at the picture many times. When he began to eat his fish, he put on his glasses and looked at the picture again. Before he began to eat his fruit, he got up and walked over to the picture to look at it more closely. At last when they began to drink their coffee, he understood that the picture was upside down."Why, my friend", he said, "my picture is hung upside down".
"Oh, is it?" said the American. "Why didn't you tell me so at once?"
"Well, you see, I was not sure myself at first", said the artist.

Auditors are usually independent certified accountants who review the financial records of a company. These reviews are called audits. They are usually performed al fixed intervals - quarterly, semiannually or annually. Auditors are employed either regularly or on a part-time basis. Some large companies maintain a continuous internal audit by their nun accounting departments. These auditors are called internal auditors Not so many years ago the presence of an auditor suggested that a company was having financial difficulties or that irregularities had been discovered in the records. Currently, however, outside audits are a normal and regular part of business practice. Auditors see that current transactions are recordered promptly and completely. Their duty is to reduce the possibility- of misappropriation, to identify mistakes or detect fraudulent transactions. Then they are usually requested to propose solutions for these problems. Thus auditors review financial records and report to the management on the current state of the company's fiscal affairs in the form of Auditor's Report or Auditor's Opinion. Here is a specimen Auditor s Opinion: AUDITOR'S OPINION The Board of Directors Johnson and Co. 1 have examined the Balance Sheet of Johnson and Co.. as of 31 December. 1994, as well as the related Statements of income and retained earnings and changes in the financial position for the year ending on that date. My examination was made in accordance with generally accepted standards of auditing It included tests of the accounting records and those other procedures that I considered necessary. In my opinion, the accompanying Balance Sheet and Statement of Income and Retained Earnings present fairly the financial condition of Johnson and Co.. on 31 December, 1994. Daniel H. Peterson Certified Public Accountant New York. NY. 30 January 1995

Non-ferrous metals are more expensive than ferrous metals and are used only when some characteristic not possessed by iron or steel is essential or desirable in application. These characteristics are: high electrical and thermal conductivity, high corrosion resistance, non-magnetic qualities, light weight, etc.

The metals most frequently used to make non-ferrous metal castings are copper, tin, zinc, lead, nickel, gold and aluminium. Some of the basic non-ferrous metals and their characteristics are described below.

Copper is a reddish-brown, tough metal. It has very high electric conductivity and high corrosion-resistant qualities. Copper is used for making electrical contacts and wires, pipes, telephone cables, tanks, water heaters, etc.

Zinc is a hard, brittle, bluish-white metal that is employed in the pure form as sheet zinc.

Lead is a very heavy bluish-grey metal which is very soft. This metal is highly resistant to corrosion, but its strength is so low that it must be supported by a core of some other metal. Lead is used for lining pipes, acid tanks and coating electrical cables.

Aluminium is a soft, silvery white metal. It is light weight, has high corrosion-resistant qualities and is used for automobile and airplane parts as well as for making different light-weight objects used in everyday life such as: frames, cooking utensils, chairs, etc.
