One day in 1777, Jose Montgolfier rested before the fire drying his nearby laundry after washing. A little later, he noticed that one of his shirts began to rise up. The young man wondered what was going on and he threw a few small pieces of paper in the fireplace to see whether there will be with them the same. When he saw them departing from the chimney, he concluded that the smoke has the force that lifts and carries things in the air. Jose loved science and wanted to become an inventor, because he began to think about a trade that would help control the smoke and tear people from the land. Together with his brother Jacques, he began experimenting with what later became the first balloon in the hot air.

Montgolfier brothers quickly realized that the heat and not smoke raises things. 19th September 1783, they presented their first balloon in the hot air, which was made of paper and lumps. They set fire to the straw under him, and helped heat the ball up in the air. Since this was the first trip, the Montgolfier brothers too worried to pick up on the ball itself. So they put a sheep, a duck and a chicken in a basket, which hung below the ball during a 2-mile journey.

The new discovery was a brilliant success, and the animals landed unharmed and screaming. A huge crowd, including members of the French royal family, gathered to look at the ball soaring high in the sky. Later, the brothers asked permission from the king to send people up in a balloon. King agreed, and the first flight with people as passengers held in Paris November 21, 1783 with the greatest success. Balloon reached an altitude of 150 meters, flying over rooftops, beginning of a long tradition of ballooning.

Animals in the air

Can you believe that the history of the hot-air balloon began with a sheep, a duck and a chicken?

One day in 1777, Joseph Montgolfier was relaxing in front of the fire with his laundry drying nearby. After a while, he noticed that one of his shirts started to float upwards. The young man was curious about what happening, so he threw some small pieces of paper into the fireplace to see if the same thing happened to them. When he saw them coming out of the chimney, he came to the conclusion that smoke had the power to lift up and carry them through the air. Joseph loved science and wanted to become an inventor, so he started trying to think of a craft that would be able to capture smoke and heat and lift people off the ground. Along with his brother Jacques, he began performing experiments on something that later became the first hot-air balloon.

The Montgolfier brothers quickly realised that it was heat and not smoke that had the power to lift things. On 19th September 1783, they presented their first hot-air balloon, which was made from paper and cloth. They burned some straw underneath it and the heat helped the balloon to float. As this was its first trip, the Montgolfier brothers were too nervous to go up in the balloon themselves. So, instead they put a sheep, a duck and a chicken in the basket that hung below the balloon for the two-mile journey.

The new invention was a great success and the animals landed safe and sound. A huge crowd, including some members of the French Royal Family gathered to watch the balloon floating high in the sky. Shortly afterwards, brothers asked the king for permission to send men up in the balloon. The King agreed, and the first flight consisting of human passengers took place in Paris on 21st November 1783 with great success. The balloon reached heights of around 150 metres as it floated over the Paris rooftops, starting a long tradition of hot-air ballooning.

The Bottle
10 July was a very special day. In fact, it was Jack Peterson's birthday. On that day everybody tried to do something nice for him. Mum and Dad always gave him a lot of presents and took him to interesting places. Two years ago they went on an excursion to Mars. Last year they went to the Galaxy Zoo. They saw interesting animals there: bats, rabbits, hens and the most exciting thing: a real dog!
Yes, all Jack's birthdays were great, but this year — 2170 — his Grandfather promised him the best present. "On your birthday^' Granddad said, "we'll go camping!"
"Camping?" Jack didn't know this word, so he wasn't really interested, but suddenly he heard his mum's voice.
"Camping!" she cried. "What are you talking about?" "You can't put the life of my child in danger!" "It'll be OK, Kate," Grandfather sighed. "We'll wear our masks and we'll take a lot of extra oxygen with us." 'And you won't touch anything! Do you promise, Dad?" Jack's mum shouted. "Of course I promise," Granddad answered. After this conversation Jack really wanted to go camping. "Camping is dangerous - it's a real adventure," he thought.
On the morning of 10 July Granddad woke Jack up very early. They put their masks on and went outside. It was dark. Jack knew about the sun, but he never saw it. They went to the forest. There were six trees and a little river. Grandfather found a stick and started digging a hole in the ground. He looked sad. "What are we going to do?" Jack asked. "Well, you can touch the water in the river, but don't forget to clean your hands after that. Or we can play hide-and-seek'" Grandfather sighed. "Is that all camping is, Granddad?" Jack cried. "Then camping is the most boring thing in the world!"
"It used to be fun in my time," Granddad sighed again. 'And what was it like?" Jack asked. "In my time we used to go out without oxygen and masks. The air used to be good and clean, the sun used to shine and it used to be warm." "You are joking, Granddad!" Jack said.
"No, it is true. We used to stay in this forest for two or three weeks. Yes, yes. This forest used to be very big."
'And where did you use to sleep?" Jack asked. "We used to sleep in tents on the ground. This place near the river used to be our campsite."
'And what did you use to eat?" Jack asked. "We used to cook our food on the campfire. We also used to pick berries and mushrooms. They were tasty'' "Now I know you are pulling my leg, Granddad," Jack said. "Berries and mushrooms are poisonous. Every child knows that." "They didn't use to be poisonous in our time. And I'll tell you more. We used to swim in this river and drink the water from it." Grandfather stopped digging. There was something in the hole. Jack picked it up. It was a very old plastic bottle. There was some paper in it. Granddad took the paper out and read it. "Sam Peterson loves Susan Brown," the note read.
"Cool! Is that your bottle, Granddad? Who is Susan Brown?" Jack asked.
But Granddad didn't say anything. His face was as red as a beetroot. He took Jack's arm and said, "You want to see the spaceship race today, don't you? Then we must go home. I think camping was a really bad idea."
