The Last Inch (by James Aldridge, adapted) It wasn't easy for Ben,

a pilot of forty-three, to find a flying job. That's why it was a stroke of luck when he was offered a job by the Commercial Television Stock Company. They paid a thousand dollars for every five hundred feet of shark film. Ben used a light plane to get to a little desert island in the Red Sea where the water along the coast was always filled with good-sized sharks. Ben took his ten-year-old son Davy with him. He was a shy quiet boy who had never been particularly loved by his parents. While filming the sharks, Ben was attacked by a huge tiger shark. He was lucky to get out of the water, but his body was a bleeding mess. He couldn't feel his arms or his feet. He had lost a lot of blood and was in and out of consciousness. The boy had to either fly the plane or die from thirst and the hot sun on the island where nobody would ever find them. Only once had Ben shown the boy how to fly a plane. He also explained that it was the last inch above the ground that mattered if the plane was going to crash while landing or not.

Many years ago, Mr Tailor, an Englishman, stayed in a hotelin Germany. He usually had lunch in a little cafe. Every timehe came to the table, a German who

was sitting there stoodup and said: "Mahlzeit". The Englishman answered: "Tailor".

One day, Mr Tailor met an English friend. "The Germanshave strange traditions," he said. "Every time I come to thecafe for lunch, a German stands up and tells me his name".

"That seems strange to me, too," the friend said. "What doesthe man say"? "He tells me his name - Mahlzeit," Mr Tailoranswered. His friend laughed: "Mahlzeit" isn't his name, it'sthe German word for "good appetite" The German is a politeman and he is simply saying "Mahlzeit" to you because youare going to eat".

The next day, when Mr Tailor came into the cafe, he smiledto the German and said, "Mahlzeit". The German stood upand answered: "Tailor"!

An Englishman who was in France wanted to go back to England by sea. But he had very little money. He had so little money that he could pay only for the ticket. As he knew that the trip would last only two days, he decided not to eat during these days.
As he took a ticket and got on the ship the next morning, he tried not to hear the bell for breakfast. When dinner time came, he was very hungry, but he didn't go to the dining-room. In the evening he was still more hungry, but when the waiter came to invite him to have supper, the Englishman said that he was ill.
The next day the Englishman was half-dead and couldn't stand the hunger any longer. "I shall go and even if they kick me out into the sea," said he to himself. So he went to the ship dining-room and had his dinner. In the evening he had supper but was very much afraid of his future because he didn't pay for the meals. At last he addressed the waiter and said: "Bring me the bill, please." "What bill?" asked the waiter. "For the supper and dinner I had in your dining-room." "Don't trouble, Sir. You paid for your meals when you bought the ticket."

Переведите на русский In a moment he was sleeping peacefully and Mary Poppins said in a low voice :"West!" Hills

and lakes, mountains and forests went round and round. This time they were on long white seachore. And before them there was a large black and very Dolphin with her baby.

"Mary Poppins , you're just in time for and evening swim. What are you doing here ?"

" Oh, Amelia, we are just going round the world , " Mary Poppins.

"Well, now for a meal. What would you like ?" Amelia smiled at Jane and Michael , showing her white teth.

" Thank you , Amelia . But we must be at home in a moment" said Mary Poppins.

"What kind of visit is that ? Next time you must stay for tea,and we'll all sit together on a rock and sing a song to the moon ". Amelia got very sad.

"That will be lovely " said Jane and Michael.

"Well, bye-bye then!"

"Bye, Amelia!"Michael and Jane cried.

"What are you doing,Michael?" The boy heard Mary Poppins's cold voice. The sea was not there . There was green grass and Jane and the twins and Mary Poppins walking in the park.

"Round the world and back in a minute -what a wonderful box!"said Jane.

"It's a compass. And it's mine" said Michael . "Give it to me !"

" My compass" said Mary Poppins and put it into her bag.

He looked at her very angrilly. The strange feeling inside him grew worse, and in the evening he grew very naughty. He kicked the twins and pulled Jane's hair.
