Scotland
is the most northern part of the island of Great Britain . Its population is
over 5 million people. Scotland was inhabited mainly by the Picts. In the 6th century,the
Scots from Ireland (or Scotia) settled in what is now Argyll, giving their name
to the present-day Scotland. During the 9th century ,the various parts of
Scotland united in defense against the Vikings. The powerful monarchy which
existed in England threatened Scottish independence throughout the Middle Ages.
In 1603 James 6 of Scotland become also James 1 of England when Queen Elizabeth
1 of England died without children. In 1651 Scotland was united with England,
although Scotland kept its own parliament. In 1797, both countries, realizing
the benefits of closer political and economic union , agreed on a single
parliament for Great Britain. The Cheviot Hills mark the boundary between
England and Scotland. The greater part of Scotland is surrounded by see.
Scotland includes the Hebrides off the west coast and the Orkney and Shetland
Islands off the north coast. It is bounded by the North Sea on the east.
Scotland is divided into three parts: the Highlands, the Lowlands and the
Southern Uplands. The Highlands are among the oldest mountains in the world.
There are a lot of valleys and lakes in this region, the best known lake is
Loch Ness. Most of the population of Scotland is concentrated in the Lowlands.
The biggest city is Glasgow. It is an important port in the United Kingdom.
Shipbuilding is the leading industry. But other industries such as iron and
steel, engineering and coal-mining are highly developed too. The capital of
Scotland is Edinburgh. It is the cultural center of Scotland.

The British Education System. State Education in Britain.All state schools in Britain are free, and schools provide their pupils with books and equipment for their studies.Nine million children attend 35.000 schools in Britain. Education is compulsory from 5 till 16 years. Parents can choose to send their children to a nursery school or a pre-school playgroup to prepare them for the start of compulsory education.Children start primary school at 5 and continue until they are 11. Most children are taught together, boys and girls in the same class. At 11 most pupils go to secondary schools called comprehensives which accept a wide range of children from all backgrounds and religious and ethnic groups. Ninety per cent of secondary schools in England, Scotland and Wales are co-educational.At 16 pupils take a national exam called «G.C.S.E.» (General Certificate of Secondary Education) and then they can leave school if they wish. This is the end of compulsory education.Some 16-year-olds continue their studies in the sixth form at school or at a sixth form college. The sixth form prepares pupils for a national exam called «A» level (advanced level) at IS. Yon-need «A» level to enter a university.Other 16-year-olds choose to go to a college of further education to study for more practical (vocational) diplomas relating to the world of work, such as hairdressing, typing or mechanics.Universities and colleges of higher education accept students with «A» levels from 18. Students study for a degree which takes on average three years of full-time study.Most students graduate at 21 or 22 and are given their degree at a special graduation ceremony.

History of Canada
Canada's history is an exciting story of development of a vast wilderness into a great nation. Most experts believe that the first people who lived on this land came from Asia about 15000 years ago. They came over a land bridge that once connected Asia and North America. Their descendants are known today as Indians. The ancestors of the Eskimos came to Alaska after them probably about 5000 years ago. In 1497, John Cabot, an Italian
navigator in the service of England, found rich fishing grounds off Canada's south- east
coast. His discovery led to the European exploration of Canada. France set up a colony in
eastern Canada in the early 1600's. Great Britain gained control of the country in
1763, and thousands of British emigrants came to Canada. In 1867, the French and
English-speaking Canadians helped to create a united colony called the Dominion of
Canada. Two groups worked together to settle the country and to develop its great mineral
deposits and other natural resources. Canada gained its independence from
Britain in 1931. During the middle of 20th century, hard-working Canadians turned their
country into an economic giant. Today Canada is a leading producer of wheat, oats, and
barley. Canada also ranks among the world's top manufacturing countries, and it is a
major producer of electric power. Throughout its history, Canada has often been troubled by lack of unity among its people. French Canadians, most of whom live
in the province
of Quebec, have struggled
