LLOW On the Eastern shore of the Hudson River there was a little valley, among high hills, which was one of the quietest places in the whole world. This valley had long been known by the name of Sleepy Hollow. Many strange stories about ghosts were told and retold in a village situated there. The most frightful, however, was the one about a headless horse¬man. It is said that it was the ghost of a soldier who had been killed in battle. Once there lived in this village a schoolmaster, Crane by name. He was a tall and very thin man. In the same village lived the daughter and the only child of a rich farmer. She was a pretty girl and attracted the attention of every young man in the village. Crane too, was in love with her. But if the schoolmaster meant to win her heart, he would have to get rid of all his rivals. The one he feared most was a certain Brunt. He was a tall and strong young man and most people liked him for his bravery and great skill of a horseman. It is clear that Crane would have lived quietly in his little village to the end of his life if a very strange thing had not happened one night. In the afternoon of that day Crane was in his school when a servant brought him an invitation to a party, which was to be held that evening at Van Tassel's. The pupils were sent home an hour before the usual time, and Crane spent no less than half an hour dressing up for the party. He wished to look his best that night, therefore, he borrowed a horse from the farmer with whom he was then living. The horse's name was Gunpowder. It was towards evening that Crane arrived at home of Van Tassel. The house was full of guests and Brunt was among them. There were many good things to eat and a lot of dancing. Everybody enjoyed himself that night. When the party was nearly over, Crane suddenly left the hall where the guests were dancing. He went to Katrina's room where he stayed alone with the girl for a short while. They must have had an unpleasant conversation for the school¬master looked sad when he re-entered the hall.

There are lots of different ways of communication nowadays such as letters and telegrams, telephones and the Internet, but perhaps the most popular one is a mobile phone. People choose to use mobile phones for communication because they are very convenient. First of all, they are small enough to fit into our pockets so we can easily take it everywhere and always stay in touch. Besides, they allow us not only to phone, but to send small messages, which is very cheap. What is more, if you have one of the new multimedia mobiles, you can log on to the Net, pay for things, play games, interact with TV programmes and take photos to send to your friends. Very tempting, isn’t it?However, some people are against mobile phones because they think that radiation from mobiles leads to cancer, which hasn’t been actually proved. Besides, psychologists say we are becoming addicted to mobiles. Surveys show that teenagers are reading less and mobile use is affecting the marks of secondary school students. In addition, a big problem with mobiles is crime because lots of teenagers have become victims of mobile phone theft.I believe it’s a good idea to have a mobile with you everywhere, even at school, because in case of emergency we can contact our parents to let them know that we are OK or to ask for help. Besides, if we need some information or advice, we can always get in touch with our friends or parents. Moreover, we can use mobile phones as calculators at the lessons. On the other hand, mobile phones can be a distraction in classes, especially if students forget to silence their ringer. In addition, some students can use mobile phones with text messaging capabilities to cheat on tests, which of course is not honest. There are some other means of communication which are becoming extremely popular nowadays, for example, e-mail or instant messaging, which allow you to keep in touch through the Internet. Instant messaging, or IM, is more immediate than e-mail because you don’t have to check your inbox for new messages as they appear instantly. You type a short note and send it from your computer to another, where it pops up straight away on the screen. Another advantage is that more than two people at a time can join in a conversation. What is more, communication by IM isn’t restricted to text. You can send pictures, and if you have microphones and speakers, you can talk, which is an advantage because internet connection charges are usually cheaper than phone calls. As for me, I use different ways of communication but I prefer a mobile because it’s more convenient.

other meaning? What is it? 3) From where does the phrase originate? 4) It the legend about "Mind the Gap" true / terrifying / humorous? 5) Do you know any similar legends about the place where you live?

Текст:

Mind the Gap" is not just an announcement that you'll hear in the London Underground when a train arrives at a station. Much more than just a warning about the "gap" between a carriage and the platform, it's a phrase that has entered popular culture and has become synonymous with London. People who have visited England's capital city say "Mind the Gap" to each other — often accompanied by knowing glances and subtle nods — while the rest of the world wonders what they are on about.
The phrase originated on the Northern Line, where the gaps between the curved train platforms at Embankment Station and the train itself were particularly large.
The biggest gaps one needs to mind are at Bank Station on the Central Line and at Waterloo Station on the Bakerloo Line. Basically, early in the history of Tube-line building the companies had to build their railways beneath public roads, so sharp curves were required at some points. Probably, the gap at Bank Station is so large because the tunnel diggers of the time had to turn from side to side a lot to miss the Bank of England's vaults.
One of the funniest urban legends about "Mind the Gap" is as follows:
Once you are on a train platform, beware! Approaching trains sometimes disturb the large Gappe bats that live in the tunnels. The Gappes were brought to London in the early 19th century by French smugglers and have proved impossible to get rid of. The announcement "Mind the Gappe!" is a signal that you should cover your hair and look Itowards the ceiling. Very few people have ever been killed by Gappes, though, and they are considered only a minor drawback to an otherwise excellent means of transport.
