in Scotland, the New year's Eve celebration is called Hogmanay which means 'new morning' in Celtic. It is surely the most exciting celebration of the year.Preparations for the celebration start early on December 31st. People clean their houses and throw out old unwanted things. They also bake special shortbread biscuit and rich fruit cake called 'Black Bun',to share with family and friends on the big day.on the night of Hogmanay there are live concerts and fabulous carnivals in the streets of all Scottish towns. A lot of excited people get dressed up in colourful costumes. In some cities there is also a long trochlight procession through the street that crowds watch excitedly. As soon as the bells chime twelve, everyone kisses and heartily wishes each other a Happy New Year. Then people join hands and proudly sing the traditional song 'Auld Lang Syne'. After that, there is a stunning fireworks display which is the icing on the cake. On 1st January people visit friends and neighbours to wish them luck for the New Year. Hogmanay is certainly a great celebration. People feel happy to be with friends and family and look forward to a good year full of success.

What
you have to remember is that the desert - any true desert - is an amazingly
beautiful, amazingly spiritual place. It's also an extremely dangerous place,
and every year we have several cases where people, usually tourists have
serious problems in the desert and have to be rescued. And if people just use a
bit of common sense, and follow a few basic rules for survival, this could so
easily be avoided.

I
think the first thing is, if you decide to go into the desert for whatever
reason, just let one or two people know where and when you're going, and when
you expect to get back. That way if something does go wrong, people will know
where to start looking. There's not really much chance of finding you if we
don't where to look. And never ever go into the desert alone. As for things you
should take, well there's just one word which is water. You must be sure to
take plenty of water, and by plenty, I mean at least two litres per person per
day. In the desert there really is no such thing as too much water. And
definitely no alcohol, not even a cold beer - that will dry you out and make
you even thirstier. Check you've enough spare fuel for your vehicle - at least
twenty litres. As for the equipment you should take, well, of course, a map,
and a compass ... preferably a couple of maps, and be sure to take a small
first-aid kit with a pair of scissors, some bandages and a sharp knife. And
take some matches so you can start a fire if need be.

You
can experience extremes of climate in the desert, so you'll need to have lots
of sun screen if you don't want a bad case of sunburn. On the other hand the
temperature drops dramatically at night Actually, more people die from the cold
than from the heat, and very often people don't take any warm clothes to put on
at night... but you'll need them ...

A trip to London is never complete without a visit to the Tower of London. The site dates back to the 11 th century arid is guarded by the Yeoman warders, or 'Beefeaters!

King Henry Vlll first introduced Beefeaters in 1485

1)When he used them as bodyguards. Their duties included

looking after the prisoners in the Tower and guarding the Crown Jewels. These days though, their main role is to act as guides for

the many tourists 2)that visit the Tower every year. They also

take care of the eight big black ravens 3)That live in the tower.

There are 36 Yeoman Warders at the Tower and they are all

men 4)Whose were in the armed forces for 22 years or more.

They live in the Tower with their families.

The Beefeaters are most famous for their striking red and gold uniform, but they actually only wear this on formal occasions. Most of the time they wear a dark blue uniform with red trimmings*.

No one is exactly sure 5) where the name 'Beefeater' comes from.

One theory says that the warders used to be paid with meat instead of money! Others say that the name comes from the French word bvffetier. Buffetiers were guards in the palace of French Kings. They protected the King's food.

Pocket Money.
A number of people believe that pocket money teaches teenagers to be responsible. Others say that teenagers are too young to deal with money and that their parents should just buy them what they need.
Many parents wonder whether to give pocket money to their children and how much to give. Most Moms and Dads think that pocket money helps the child learn to handle money sensibly. However, pocket money may become a battleground if not handled correctly from the very start.
Personally, I think that by giving pocket money parents help children learn to manage money while they are young. It also helps them make choices and feel that they are important members of the family. Even a small amount can give a child the feeling of responsibility and independence. Parents can suggest the child keeping a little book in their money box to record ins and outs. This will help with their mathematics and will encourage them to save money.

weekend in my uncle is big, old house in the country. It was stormy outside, so we decided to spend a cosy evening chatting together in the living room dowstairs.

Suddenly, there was a powerful gust of wind. The lights fickered and then went out altogether. " What was that?" I said. " Don it worry, John, it is just a power cut, " Greg reassured me. We carried on laughing and telling scary stories in the dark. After a while, there was a bright flash of lightning that lit up the whole room. There was a loud gasp. "Andy is missng!" Am cried.

We all looked at each other confused and scared, because no one had seen Andy laeve the room.We felt our way around the house, calling Andy, but there was no reply. We went back to the living room and triend to think of what to do next. Just then, there was a loud snore from the corner of the room. At that moment, the lights came back on. There was Andy, fast asleep on a big , velvet sofa!

Andy sat up sleepily, rubbing his eyes." Oh good, the lights are back on! " he said. " I was sleepy and felt like a snooze. I didn it want anyone to trip over me so I crawled over me so I crawled over here. " We were all very relieved.
